THE
UNION
Thought for the Week
Abram, our father in faith, suddenly appears today as the man who hears
the Word of God. He responds immediately and leaves everything behind,
setting out for an unknown land, which he will discover in an unknown
future. As our Lenten journey continues, Abram, or Abraham as he later
came to be known, stands as an example to us all. The Lenten journey is
a symbol of life's journey from birth to everlasting life. As we make
progress along the "Way", the Word of God is offered to us for
a nourishment and growth.
Our Sunday
Gospel of the Transfiguration offers us a glimpse of an experience of
Jesus, which will be our experience when the earthly journey comes to
its completion. During Lent, enlightened with the glory of God's presence
and inspired by the Word of God, as Abram was, let us keep our minds and
hearts fixed on our final destination, which is nothing less than a share
in the life of God.
As members
of the Church we are fortunate in having many opportunities to hear the
Word of God. The Sunday readings, which this year focus on the Gospel
of Matthew, give us much food for thought and reflection. During the week
following each Sunday we should use our Bibles to repeatedly read the
readings of Sunday. We should pray and reflect on the aspects that are
significant for us, and we should read the text before and after the particular
Sunday passages so as to be able to appreciate more fully the context
and the author's intention. In this way, sustained by the Eucharist, we
shall be transformed into the image of the risen Lord, which is the purpose
of our life's journey.
