Pastures New - Further Update
I announced a while ago that I am to take up a new diocesan appointment
in September. I am to become the "Episcopal Vicar for the Formation
of the Clergy". The job description, which has just been completed,
is both complex and extensive. It will require me to work "as full-time
as possible," to quote the Bishop, and this means that I must move
from Fareham into a smaller parish. It seems pretty certain that I will
move to Wash Common, which is near Newbury. A number of people have asked
me when I will actually be leaving Fareham and Portchester. This will
be during the week commencing the 16th September. While I shall not be
in the Parish at the time, I shall still be joining the Pilgrimage to
Rome, as previously arranged. May I ask for your prayers as I begin the
preparations for leaving Fareham and starting my new work. As yet, I am
unable to give the name of my successor - PJT.
Visit
to Madrid
I have had a very enjoyable visit to Madrid and Bishop Bravlio of
Salamanca and Father Manuel send their love and best wishes to everyone.
- PJT.

THE
UNION
Thought for the Week
The story of the two disciples meeting with Jesus on the road
to Emmaus and sharing a meal with him bears a striking resemblance to
our own celebration of the Lord's supper each time we celebrate Mass.
Our celebration of Mass can be divided into four main parts or rites:
The Gathering rite, the Liturgy of the Word, the Liturgy of the Eucharist,
and the Dismissal Rite. These same four rites are also present in the
Emmaus supper.
The Gathering
Rite for the Emmaus Supper took place on the road, when Jesus and the
two disciples came together and greeted one another. The Liturgy of the
Word took place when Jesus explained the Scriptures to the two disciples.
The Liturgy of the Eucharist took place in the house of one of the disciples.
Jesus " took the bread and said the blessing; then he broke it
at handed it to them". These three actions are the same today.
The taking of the bread describes the preparation of the gifts. The blessing
of the bread describes the Eucharistic Prayer over the gifts. The breaking
and handing out the bread describes the Communion service.
Finally,
the dismissal rite took place when Jesus "vanished from their
sight," and the disciples went forth to bear witness to their
encounter with Jesus in the breaking of bread. This can be understood
as the most important thing which happens in today's Gospel and the most
important part of the Mass - The Dismissal rite. For the purpose of the
Eucharist is to nourish us with the Word of the Lord and the Body and
Blood of the Lord, so that we may go forth to bear witness to the Lord
and bring the kingdom of God into existence. The Eucharist, however, does
not end with the Dismissal rite but, in a sense, begins with it. We, too,
must go forth and proclaim what the disciples at Emmaus did. We, too,
must proclaim that Jesus is risen and is in our midst. For, if we do not
deliver this message, then we are failing our mission as Jesus' followers.
New Parish
Web Site Address
Our parish web site has taken another step forward and now has a new and
not such a difficult web address to remember (www.sacred-heart.org.uk).
The old address will still be in operation for the foreseeable future
and, if used, will take you automatically across to the new address. We
are getting over 14,000 page views per month and hopefully this will continue
to increase month after month. Our parish newsletter is one of our most
popular pages and continues to attract more and more interest from around
the world. We would like to encourage you, our parishioners, to become
more active on our discussion board, to ask questions, make friends and
debate subjects of interest. Please tell
us what you would like to see on the web site - if you would like
to write an article that you feel would be of interest to others, please
do. We need your ideas. Our discussion
board currently has forums from 'Coffee mornings' to 'Skateboarding'
and can be expanded to meet the parish's needs. Please help us maintain
all that has been achieved so far - do get online and use your web site!
