THE
UNION
Thought for the Week
The custom of focusing on Jesus as the Good Shepherd during the
Easter Season is a very ancient practice. Christians were certainly doing
it in the seventh century! It is a very rich image, which can mean so
much to us no matter what our state of mind.
One of the
shepherd's tasks in Jesus' time was to know all his sheep by name and
to keep them safely within the flock. At night he would bring them to
a common enclosure where everyone's sheep was kept. The shepherds took
it in turns to lie across the sheep gate so that no one could enter. That
is why, in our Gospel today, Jesus says that he is the "Gate of
the Sheepfold".
The Good
Shepherd's work of gathering his sheep and keeping them together has long
been the model for the work of the Bishop with his priests and deacons
in a diocese or local church. That is why today is known as "Vocations
Sunday". This is a day of prayer for an increase of vocations
to religious life and the ordained ministry.
Next Sunday
we shall read Bishop Crispian's Pastoral Letter on the subject of vocations.
He says that the call to priesthood is always a gradual process. This
was certainly true in my own experience. When I was about nine years old,
one of the priests in my home parish asked me if I would like to be a
priest. I cannot remember my answer but his question stayed with me throughout
my childhood and adolescence. As each year passed, the idea of becoming
a priest became stronger. But it took twenty years before I did anything
about it! I was 29 and working as the Deputy Head at St. Jude's in Fareham
when I asked Fr. Hetherington, who was the Parish Priest here, what I
had to do to become a priest. Five years later I was ordained and my life
as a priest began. I have no regrets. I enjoy every moment of it and still
cannot quite believe that I am a Catholic priest after nearly 19 years!
To the young
men in our parish and to the older ones for whom it is still a possibility,
I would ask the question "Would you like to become a priest?"
Churches

be given shortly.

Barkworth R.I.P.

New Parish
Web Site Address
Our parish web site has taken another step forward and now has a new and
not such a difficult web address to remember (www.sacred-heart.org.uk).
The old address will still be in operation for the foreseeable future
and, if used, will take you automatically across to the new address. We
are getting over 14,000 page views per month and hopefully this will continue
to increase month after month. Our parish newsletter is one of our most
popular pages and continues to attract more and more interest from around
the world. We would like to encourage you, our parishioners, to become
more active on our discussion board, to ask questions, make friends and
debate subjects of interest. Please tell
us what you would like to see on the web site - if you would like
to write an article that you feel would be of interest to others, please
do. We need your ideas. Our discussion
board currently has forums from 'Coffee mornings' to 'Skateboarding'
and can be expanded to meet the parish's needs. Please help us maintain
all that has been achieved so far - do get online and use your web site!
