THE UNION
Thought for the Week
In today's Gospel, Jesus prays to His Father in these words: "Father, the hour has come: glorify your Son so that your Son may glorify you." The "hour" refers to his death on the cross. How will Jesus' death on the cross give glory to Him and His Father? It would seem to do just the opposite. When we say something will give glory to a person, we mean it will reveal to the world the true greatness of that person.

Strangely enough, history shows that a person's true greatness is often revealed only after the person's death, and I'm not only talking about the saints. During his lifetime, for example, the French painter Vincent van Gogh produced 1,700 paintings and drawings. He sold only one of them while he lived for about £40 and died with everyone, including himself believing that he was a complete failure as an artist. It wasn't until after his death that the truth came out and the whole world learned how truly great he was and one of his paintings sold at a world auction 100 years later for over £80.000,000.

In a similar way, the death of Jesus gave him glory because it revealed to the world how truly great he was. The sight of Jesus on the cross drew people to him like a magnet. By dying on the cross, Jesus showed us the depth of His Father's love. He showed us that there was nothing that the Father's love would not do for us. His Father loved us so much that He allowed His own Son to suffer crucifixion for us. However, that was not the end as it was followed by His resurrection, which was His greatest glory of all. It was the proof that sin could do its worst to Jesus, but it could not conquer Him. In this way, the resurrection was the final and fullest glorification of Jesus by His heavenly Father.
