THE
UNION
Thought for the Week
With the coming of the Holy Spirit, which we celebrated last
Sunday at Pentecost, the followers of Jesus received a deeper appreciation
of Jesus' teaching and, therefore, a deeper appreciation of God. It is
this deeper appreciation of God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit that we
celebrate today. So, in order to make our celebration relevant, we need
to think how we can make this mystery a part of our daily lives. One way
of doing this is to follow the example of members of religious orders
who take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. These vows can be seen
as opportunities to devote ourselves more fully to the Holy Trinity.
Firstly,
the vow of poverty can be seen as an opportunity to devote ourselves to
God the Father by expressing a special trust in His providence. Secondly,
the vow of chastity can be seen as a way of showing special devotion to
God the Son, by loving and following Jesus as closely as possible. Thirdly,
the vow of obedience can be seen as an opportunity to show special devotion
to the Holy Spirit by listening to the voice of the Spirit and learning
God's will for us.
Although
people who are not in religious orders do not have to take these vows,
as Christians we are all called to trust the Father, follow the Son and
listen to the Spirit. None of us know what the future holds for us in
a world of financial ups and downs and so we need to trust that our heavenly
Father will provide. In a world of selfishness and self-centredness we
need the example of Jesus to follow and love one another as He loved us.
Finally, in a world of conflicting voices and ideas, we need the guidance
of the Holy Spirit who speaks to us in prayer. And so, even though we
don't all take these vows, we can still voluntarily apply them to ourselves
and bring the Holy Trinity into the nitty-gritty of our own daily lives.

Change
in Mass times on Sunday 14th July
Last weekend, at all the Masses, we explained that we would need to
alter the Mass times in our parish. This is because Fr. Chris will be
on his own next year and is permitted to say three Sunday Masses. Fr.
Charles has very kindly agreed to celebrate one Sunday Mass each week.
This means that there will be four Masses instead of the six that we have
become used to.
As from
Sunday 14th July the Masses will be as follows:
6.30pm
Saturday-Sacred Heart
9.00am Sunday-Sacred Heart
11.00am Sunday-St Philip Howard
5.30pm Sunday-Our Lady of Walsingham

A Message
of thanks - Wells for India
"The cheque for £2110 arrived just at the right time. Please
thank the whole parish. We are getting increasingly desperate e-mails
from the people in the villages of the Thar Desert. They have no water,
sand storms are increasing in ferocity and temperatures soaring towards
50 deg. C. We have 10 tractors with 8 water tankers. We need another two
water tankers. The £2110 is being used to buy one water tanker and
also to support the taking of drinking water to the villagers who are
too distant to get water themselves. With kindest wishes to the parish
and a thank you from all the families who will be helped to survive the
drought." Nicholas Grey, Chairman, Wells for India.
Thanks
from St Patrick's Missionary Society
"I wish to acknowledge the cheque for £1089.00 and Euro 15
which your secretary had sent. Please thank the people of the parish for
their very generous response to our Appeal." Tom Ryan SPS
