THE
UNION
Thought for the Week
Up and down the land, people will be celebrating with the Queen.
I hope that these few days of celebration will be memorable and relaxing
for many! Celebration is a vital part of life because it brings people
together and nourishes the spirit!
Last Thursday,
the celebration for Catholics focussed on the great gift to the Church
of the Lord's Body and Blood. The feast has been known as 'Corpus Christi'
since 1246 when it began in the diocese of Liege. To set aside a day to
reflect on this great gift is vital because the Eucharist is at the heart
of the life of the Church. It provides an opportunity for us to think
about the gift itself and the response that we should make. As we eat
and drink during our celebration of Mass, we take into ourselves not bread
and wine but the life and reality of the risen Jesus. By the power and
action of God's Holy Spirit, the bread and wine is transformed into his
Body and Blood. It is this gift, which nourishes, strengthens and unites
the "Body of Christ", which is the Church. St. Augustine of
Hippo, who is quoted in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, puts it
like this:
"If
you are the body and members of Christ,
then it is your sacrament that is placed on the table of the Lord;
it is your sacrament you receive.
To that which you are, respond 'Amen' ('yes, it is true!')
and by responding to it you assent to it.
For you hear the words, 'the Body of Christ' and respond 'Amen'.
Be then a member of the Body of Christ that your Amen may be true."
It is deep
within our tradition that we all have absolute respect for the Lord's
Body and Blood. We are careful about language. The food we eat and drink
is not bread and wine and is not described as such. We use the words that
have become part of our everyday vocabulary as Catholics: the Blessed
Sacrament, the Body and Blood of the Lord, the Eucharist, the Precious
Blood, Holy Communion. Another part of our traditional practice is that
we remain silent in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament and that we
genuflect or bow when we come into this presence. St. Thomas Aquinas says:
"O Godhead hid, devoutly I adore thee,
who truly art within the forms before me;
to thee my heart I bow with bended knee,
as failing quite in contemplating thee".

Change in
Mass times on Sunday 14th July
Recently, we explained that we would need to alter the Mass times in
our parish. This is because Fr. Chris will be on his own next year and is
permitted to say three Sunday Masses. Fr. Charles has very kindly agreed
to celebrate one Sunday Mass each week. This means that there will be four
Masses instead of the six that we have become used to.
As from
Sunday 14th July the Masses will be as follows:
6.30pm
Saturday-Sacred Heart
9.00am Sunday-Sacred Heart
11.00am Sunday-St Philip Howard
5.30pm Sunday-Our Lady of Walsingham
