THE
UNION
Thought for the Week
In today's Gospel, when Jesus calls Matthew, a tax collector,
to be one of his closest associates, we have yet another example of Jesus'
ability to see beyond what people are to knowing what they can become,
if they try. Matthew clearly gave up a lot when he accepted Jesus' invitation
to follow him but he also got a lot in return. He gave up a comfortable,
predictable life, but in return he got an unpredictable life filled with
adventure. He gave up a good income but in return he got the satisfaction
of knowing that he was doing something significant. He gave up a life
that might have ended with a large financial gain but in return he received
a life that would never end. He gave up his tax collector's job but in
return got the job of recording the greatest news the world has ever had.
The day
Matthew left his tax collector's job and followed Jesus was a day of joy,
not only for himself but also for the entire human race. Matthew wasn't
the most savoury and most likely person to be one of Jesus' associates.
In fact, Jesus often chose the most unlikely imaginable people to follow
him (and continues to do so today) for Jesus is not so much interested
in our past as in our future. Each one of us, without exception, is a
candidate called by Jesus to work with him in a special way to build God's
kingdom here on earth. Whether we answer that call or not is up to us.
If we answer it, it will mean giving up certain things, but in return
we too, like Matthew, will receive certain things in return and what we
receive will outweigh, by far, what we give up. This week, let's think
about what we would need to give up in order to follow Jesus more closely
~ then maybe put our thoughts into actions. Let us also remember to pray
for those candidates who will be answering Jesus' call this Friday by
being Confirmed.

Change in
Mass times on Sunday 14th July
Recently, we explained that we would need to alter the Mass times in
our parish. This is because Fr. Chris will be on his own next year and is

to celebrate one Sunday Mass each week. This means that there will be four
Masses instead of the six that we have become used to.
As from
Sunday 14th July the Masses will be as follows:
6.30pm
Saturday-Sacred Heart
9.00am Sunday-Sacred Heart
11.00am Sunday-St Philip Howard
5.30pm Sunday-Our Lady of Walsingham
