THE
UNION
Thought for the Week
The warm damp summer weather is giving gardeners plenty to do!
Already a good number of us have eaten more than our fair share of strawberries
and cream. The rigorous growth that happens in this country in July provides
a very fitting context to listen to the beautiful and short reading from
Isaiah today. Quoting the Lord, Isaiah writes "As the rain and
snow come down from the heavens and do not return without watering the
earth, making it yield and giving growth to provide seed for the sower
and bread for the eating, so the word that goes forth from my mouth does
not return to me empty, without carrying out my will and succeeding in
what it was sent to do." (Isaiah 55.11)
Isaiah uses
an image from the world of nature to describe the mighty power for good
of the "Word of God". John, in his Gospel, tells us that
the Word of God is Jesus himself. "The Word was made flesh, he
lived among us and we saw his glory, the glory that is his as the only
Son of the Father, full of grace and truth." (John 1.14)
When we
listen to the readings at Mass we hear the Word of God proclaimed to us.
It comes as a gift from God to bring us life and joy. That is why the
Sunday Lectionary, from which our readings come, is such a precious gift
to us as a worshipping community. I have long been convinced that the
Sunday readings, which offer us an opportunity to listen to the whole
mystery of Jesus' work for us, provide a vast resource for our growth
and education in the Faith. The process of "Lectionary Based Catechesis",
which is so simple and powerful, is something that all our groups and
meetings should use each time they come together. It provides a way of
drawing upon the strength and life offered by the Word of God. Advice
on the process is available either from me or from the Department for
Evangelisation and Catechesis at Park Place.
Sr. Mary
Moore
It is with considerable regret that I must announce the departure of Sr.
Mary from the parish of Fareham and Portchester. She will be leaving us

There will be a collection for Sr. Mary at the end of all Masses this
weekend, 14th July. Contributions may also be left at the Presbytery marked
"Sr. Mary". The collection for the Apostleship of the Sea will
be transferred to Sunday 21st July.

St. Jude's
-Vacancy for Foundation Governor
Bishop Crispian, who has absolute discretion in the appointment of Foundation
Governors, is seeking applications from committed baptised Catholics who
wish to be considered for the above vacancy. The governors of a Catholic
school work as a team, in close co-operation with the headteacher and
all staff. In addition to the legal responsibilities of the Governing
Body, the Foundation Governors have a responsibility for preserving the
religious character of the school, sustaining and developing the school
as a Catholic educating community in accordance with Canon (church) law
and the teaching of the Catholic Church and giving clear witness, as individuals,
and as a team, to the Gospel message and to the Church's teaching. Appropriate
training is available during the period of service (from date of appointment
until 31 August 2005). Lack of experience in education in a Catholic school
should not deter anyone from applying if there is a genuine desire to
serve the mission of the Church. Application packs are available from
the Parish Priest, the School Office or the Department for Schools Governance,
Park Place Pastoral Centre, Winchester Road, Wickham PO17 5HA. Closing
date for receipt of applications is 22 July 2002.

church. In particular, they are looking for any photos or postcards showing
the exterior of the tin church in Foundry Lane, Shirley which was in use
from around 1902 to 1927. Please send any information to Carole Olding,
