Home Mission Sunday
Next Sunday is Home Mission Sunday. This is a day of prayer for
the spread of the Gospel in England and Wales. The theme for this year's
celebration is the love the Father has for us all shown by his all embracing
forgiveness.
Racial
Justice Sunday
'Love one another as sisters and brothers should, and have a profound
respect for each other' (Rom 12.10). Today is designated by the Christian
Churches in Britain and Ireland as a national day of prayer for racial
justice. We are all asked to reflect on racial justice issues, pray for
a Christian response, and make a commitment to work for justice. Within
the Catholic community in England and Wales, Racial Justice Sunday is
co-ordinated by the Catholic Association for Racial Justice (CARJ), tel.
020 8802 8080. If you would like to make a donation towards the work of
CARJ and the Ecumenical Racial Justice Fund please send your cheque (made
payable to 'Catholic Association for Racial Justice') to: Racial Justice
Sunday Appeal, CARJ, 9 Henry Road, Manor House, London N4 2LH.

Opportunity
Knocks!
Would you like to spend a small amount of your time with the young people
of our Parish, in a fun, relaxed way? There are several opportunities
to join the developing team of helpers and you would be most welcome to
join us. We meet at St Philip Howard Church Hall on a Sunday evening between
7-9pm. The commitment is on a rota basis and will only be about once a
month. If you would like to help in any way with our young people please
phone Sue McMullan on 01329 284638. Thank you.
Naomi
House
Do you remember our parish project for communication aids? Naomi House
Children's Hospice still keeps in touch, as they promised they would,
and are currently looking for someone to test electrical equipment which
has been donated but cannot be sold until it has been tested. If you can
help, please get in touch with the shop next door to the Post Office in
West Street. Also needed by the Play Therapist:- terracotta plant pots;
wooden-framed mirrors; glitzy clothes for dressing up - all can be dropped
in at the shop. Peter Legate, who tragically died while climbing Everest
in April, was raising money for Naomi House. If you enjoy a special challenge,
why not consider a skydive or parachute jump. Ring 01962 843513 for more
details. The August Newsletter is displayed at St Philip Howard Church,
along with order forms for Christmas cards and Christmas puddings. Please
support in any way you can. Thank you. Marian Kavanagh

THE
UNION
Thought for the Week
The point that all three of today's readings touch on is this:
there comes a time when we must speak out against evil. There comes a
time when we must confront those who are involved in wrongdoing. Moreover,
we must do this even at the risk of personal rejection. That's part of
the price of being a follower of Jesus.
When it
comes to speaking out against evil, whether it be in public or private,
there are certain things to be kept in mind. Speaking out needs to be
handled tactfully and delicately. In other words, we would do well to
keep in mind the words of an old Bananarama song which said: "It
ain't what you do. It's the way that you do it, and that's what gets results."
Take, for example, the mother who always holds her child's hand or places
her arm around her child when she corrects her. Or, there's the father
who takes his teenage children out to dinner when he needs to confront
them about certain thorny issues.
The great
British statesman Edmund Burke once said, "All that is needed
for evil to prosper is for good people to remain silent." This
is Jesus' point in today's Gospel. If we speak out against evil now, Jesus
will speak out in our defence later. Jesus said to his followers, "Everyone
who acknowledges me before others, I will acknowledge before my heavenly
Father" (Matthew 10:32). So, when we speak out against evil,
we take a stand for Jesus in this life and win from Him the promise that
He will take a stand for us in the next life.

that the cost of the return coach travel (Fareham/Gatwick) is included
in the total cost of the pilgrimage. No payment is, therefore, required
to the parish for this part of the trip. Anyone who has sent in payment
for the coach travel should, by now, have had it returned to them. If
there are any queries, please contact the parish office. The remaining
balance of payment for the Pilgrimage is due by Monday 16th September.
All cheques should be made payable to 'Anthony R Coles Travel and Conferences'
and sent to the Parish Office. If there are any queries regarding payment,
travel insurance etc. you may either telephone Anthony Coles, direct on
020 7431 3414 or contact the Parish
Office.
