THE UNION
Thought for the Week
There is a growing concern among some Christians today that we may be in danger of distorting the biblical idea of God by making Him into the kind of person that we want Him to be. This can be done by stressing those attributes of God that we like and playing down the ones we don't like or understand. I am guilty of this myself, for example, I have a tendency to stress God's love and mercy while playing down the fact that God is also a just judge to whom we will have to give an account of our lives someday. I tend to do this because I feel that too many people, for too many years, tragically looked upon God as being someone who was more eager to punish than to love. Now, however, we need to be aware that the pendulum is in danger of swinging in the opposite direction and giving us an equally distorted picture of God.

This brings us to Jesus' remarkable parable in today's Gospel. I say "remarkable" because few parables are so instructive as this one. Besides giving us a capsule summary of the Biblical story of salvation, the parable of the vineyard owner gives us a better understanding of the biblical view of God. It shows us two sides of God: the God who is a patient parent and the God who is a just judge. Like the vineyard owner in the parable, God shows incredible patience with the leaders of Israel. He gave them one opportunity after another to change their ways. He sent prophet after prophet to them. When it became clear, however, that more patience was futile, God passed judgement on them. God held them responsible for their actions. Although Jesus was referring to the chief priests and Pharisees in this parable, the story also has meaning for us. We, therefore, should remember that this same loving God who demonstrates tremendous patience with us will also hold us responsible for our actions when the time comes to judge us.
