THE UNION
Thought for the Week
In a short story called “Pigeon Feathers”, by
John Updike, a young boy, called David, begins to have doubts about his
faith. One night, while in bed, David decides to try an experiment. He takes
his hands from under the covers, lifts them above his head, and asks Jesus
to touch them. As David waits breathlessly, he thinks he feels something
touch his hands but he’s not sure. After a while he returns his hands
to the covers, not sure whether or not they have been touched.
We, too,
may experience times in our own lives when our faith seems to disappear
or go behind a cloud. When this happens, we can long desperately for a
sign of God’s glory. Peter, James and John receive a special sign
of God’s glory in today’s Gospel story of the transfiguration.
One reason they might have received this sign at this point could have
been because of what Jesus had told his disciples a few days earlier ~
that He was going to suffer and die in Jerusalem. Matthew says that when
Peter heard this, he cried out, “God forbid it, Lord! That must
never happen to you.” Jesus replied, “Get behind me
Satan!” (Matthew 16:22-23).
Peter, James
and John probably were in need of a sign at this point in their journey
as a sort of spiritual boost to help them persevere with Jesus. Their
faith may seem strong at the moment but there will soon be a time when,
even after witnessing the transfiguration, their faith will flicker and
almost fail in a garden called Gethsemane, on another mountain, the Mount
of Olives. We, too, might also be in need of a spiritual boost at this
time to help us persevere with our Lenten observances before our attention
is turned towards the suffering and death of Jesus. Perhaps that is why
the Church includes this Gospel in its Sunday Lenten readings.
