Catholic Church in Fareham and Portchester Newsletter
THE UNION
Thought for the Week
Two thousand years ago, the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples and transformed them in the most remarkable way imaginable. Before Pentecost they were a collection of confused disciples. After Pentecost they were totally changed. They were filled with a Spirit that radiated from them and swept across the world like a tidal wave. On that day the Holy Spirit transformed the disciples into the Body of Christ. On that day the Church was born.

Today we celebrate the feast of Pentecost, the birthday of the Church, which marks the moment when God began to dwell among us in a totally new way ~ not in the physical body of His Son, but in the spiritual presence of His Holy Spirit. Pentecost also marks the change in the form of Jesus’ presence among us. Jesus now dwells among us in a new way. He now lives among us, not as someone dwelling alongside us, but as someone dwelling inside us.

Jesus dwells inside us. We are united with Him in a new way. He not only dwells with each of us individually, He also dwells with us collectively. Jesus said in His farewell talk to His disciples: “On that day [when the Holy Spirit comes] you will realise that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you.” (John 14:20) And so, through our new unity with Jesus, we now form one Body with Him. So let us continue the work He and His disciples began.

Christian Ecology–“The Climate Covenant”
The world is experiencing an upsurge in flooding, drought and damaging storms. It is caused mainly by industrialised countries burning oil, coal and gas. The UK is contributing more to this climate change than the whole of Africa but the worst effects are being felt in poor countries. By the end of the century, rising sea levels and crop failures could create 150 million refugees. Next weekend, 14th/15th June, John Vivian will be speaking at all masses about ‘Operation Noah’ and ways in which you can help, including signing the “Climate Covenant”. Further information may also be found at: www.christian-ecology.org.uk/noah

Pope John Paul IIThe Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
"As for us, who are called to adoration, the Holy Spirit makes us adore in spirit and in truth. He prays in us, and we pray in Him. He it was who gave to the Apostles the force and spirit of prayer. He is called ‘the Spirit of grace and prayer’ – Spiritum gratiae et precum. Since Pentecost He has hovered over the Church and dwells in each one of us to teach us to pray, to form us on the model of Jesus Christ, and to make us like to Him in every way, so that one day we may be united to Him in His unveiled glory." (St. Peter Julian Eymard).
