Day
for Life – Sunday 6th July 2003
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales has
agreed that Sunday 6th July will be celebrated as the ‘Day
for Life’. The theme this year is the ‘blessing of children’ and
in this way we are seeking both to celebrate the gift of life and
at the same time draw attention to things that attack and diminish
its value. Copies of an 8 page colour newsletter published by the
Bishops’ Conference will be available on the day. The newsletter
will cover a range of issues, including embryo research, cloning,
child protection, women and abortion, child poverty at home and abroad,
education and the needs of children in care. All this material together
with further ideas for celebrating the blessing of children can be
downloaded from the website: www.staytruetolife.org

THE UNION
Thought for the Week
Today’s Gospel account of the calming of the storm finishes
with the disciples asking: “Who can this be? Even the wind and
sea obey him.” The answer lies in today’s first reading
and in the responsorial psalm. The first reading describes how God crested
the sea and told it what it may and may not do. The responsorial psalm
tells about sailors caught in a storm at sea. The psalmist says of them: “Then
they cried to the Lord in their need and he rescued them from their distress.
He stilled the storm to a whisper: all the waves of the sea were hushed.” Here
are just two examples in the Old Testament where we see God exercising
His mastery over the wind and the waves. God commands them and they obey
Him.
This
is exactly what we see Jesus doing in the Gospel reading. We see Him
exercising mastery
over the winds and waves. He commands them and
they obey Him. Today’s readings, therefore, show God of the Old
Testament and Jesus of the New Testament exercising the same kind of
power. They exercise the same kind of power because they are the same.
Jesus said: “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father…I
am in the Father and the Father is in me. The Father and I are one.” The
story itself, therefore, of the storm at sea answers the question: “Who
can this be?” Jesus is the Son of God. Sometimes we need to go
through the storms of life to realise this and learn to place our total
trust in Him.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
"“Devotion that has not a tent on Calvary and one near
the tabernacle, will not result in solid piety and will never accomplish
anything great. I find that we do not preach enough on this Mystery of
Love par excellence. As a result, souls suffer, become sensual and material
in their piety, and are inordinately attached to creatures because they
fail to find their consolation and strength in the Lord" (St.
Peter Julian Eymard).
If
you are able to help with Adoration in Fareham please telephone Lily
Peach on 077 678 98885. If you are able to help with Adoration at
