Sacred Heart RC Church Stained Glass Window Day for Life – Sunday 6th July 2003
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales has agreed that Sunday 6th July will be celebrated as the ‘Day for Life’. The theme this year is the ‘blessing of children’ and in this way we are seeking both to celebrate the gift of life and at the same time draw attention to things that attack and diminish its value. Copies of an 8 page colour newsletter published by the Bishops’ Conference will be available on the day. The newsletter will cover a range of issues, including embryo research, cloning, child protection, women and abortion, child poverty at home and abroad, education and the needs of children in care. All this material together with further ideas for celebrating the blessing of children can be downloaded from the website: www.staytruetolife.org

Please note that there will be no 10.30am Mass at Sacred Heart Church on 5th July due to the Open Air Mass at 12.00 noon at St. Jude’s playing field.

THE UNION
Thought for the Week
This Sunday we celebrate the feast of Ss. Peter and Paul, the first and the last of the Apostles. Both Peter and Paul had to let go of their old lifestyles before they could go on to become two of the most important figures of earliest Christianity. Peter had to let go of his family ties, and his job as a fisherman. When he was called by Jesus he sold off his nets, unloaded the huge catch of fish then gave all his money to the poor, and said goodbye to his old way of life. Paul also gave up his profession and let go of all the public respect it gave him. He let go of his sword so that he could pick up his cross to follow Jesus. And Peter had to let go of his nets in order to carry the keys for the kingdom of heaven.

St Peter and St Paul’s lives and their mission became so dramatic because their letting go was so dramatic. Their letting go was a deep act of faith in the Lord which placed them at the complete disposal of Jesus which enabled him to give them their great gifts and responsibilities. Peter, the first of the apostles and the first to whom Christ appeared after his resurrection, was the one who strengthened his brothers and sisters and provided them with the firm foundation on which the Church grew. Paul, on the other hand, driven by his love for Jesus spread the good news of Christ’s resurrection to the ends of the earth. Ultimately, however, it was God that was able to do this work through them because they had let go. This week let’s think what it is that we have to let go of in order to follow Jesus more closely.
Father Chris Whelan

Ss. Peter and Paul
Peter was a fisherman and Paul had studied to be a rabbi. Both were individualists who gave themselves completely to preaching and defending the teaching of Jesus.

Peter was executed by the Emperor Nero about 64AD. Legend says he wanted to be crucified upside down because he felt unworthy to be executed in the same way as Jesus. Paul, who was a Roman citizen, was martyred about 67AD by decapitation.

Thank Him in all humility of heart, like Saint Elizabeth in the presence of Mary and the Word Incarnate; thank Him with the vibrant ardour of Saint John the Baptist; thank Him with the joy and generosity of Zacheus when he received the visit of Jesus in his house; thank Him with the Holy Church" (St. Peter Julian Eymard).
