Denis Kavanagh
Denis Kavanagh is relinquishing his position as Sacristan at St Philip
Howard Church. Our grateful thanks go to Denis for all his hard work and
commitment over the many years of service to our community.
Welcome
We welcome to our parish family Alexander McCoy and Lucas Miles who were
baptised last Sunday. Please pray for Alexander and Lucas and their families.
Lay Leadership
A position paper on “Lay Leadership” has been produced by
members of the Diocesan Curia. They would like feedback on these ideas
by the end of the summer. If you are concerned by the changes that need
to take place in the Catholic Church, to compensate for the lack of priests
in our parishes, please read and comment on this important paper. It is
available on the parish website here
and responses can be posted through the parish discussion
board on this site.
Sierra
Leone
“Did you read the short article on the back page of Portsmouth People
appealing for school equipment for children in Sierra Leone? These children
have had no schooling during the civil war, and are badly in need of our
help. Father Chris has agreed that we can have a box at the back of each
church for the next six weeks (Sundays only). If you can spare the cost
of some ordinary pencils, (not fancy gel pens!) pens, rubbers, colours,
etc. please pop them into the boxes and they will be made up into school
packs. Every item will help. Please think about these children when you
are kitting out your own children for the next school year, and buy something
extra for children who have so little. The children of Sierra Leone will
certainly thank you.” (St Martin de Porres Group)
First
Holy Communion Programme
Parents of those children of First Holy Communion age (born before the
31st August 1996) who wish for their children to prepare for this sacrament
next year are invited to a meeting on Wednesday 17th September at St Jude’s
School at 7.30pm. This will be an information meeting for parents where
the programme will be discussed. If you wish your child to take part in
the First Holy Communion Programme please complete one of the forms to
be found at the entrance to the church and return this to Father Chris
or the Parish Office.
Mary
- Mother of the Living
The 4th International Symposium on Marian Coredemption will be held from
Tuesday 19th August – Monday 25 August 2003 at the Emmaus Retreat
Centre, West Wickham, Kent. The symposium is organised to illustrate the
Church’s doctrine, devotion and spirituality on Our Blessed Lady,
based on the teaching of the saints, popes and other official sources.
The conferences will be in non-technical language and will be of interest
to, and suitable for, laity, religious and priests. This event should
be particularly memorable in this Year of the Rosary, when our Holy Father
has given us the gift of the Ecclesia de Eucaristia encyclical letter,
which dedicates the last chapter to Our Lady “Woman of the Eucharist”.
For more information, please see the church notice boards or tel. 020
8641 6418 to obtain registration forms, accommodation or travel details.
A Message
from CAFOD
“Thank you very much for your recent donation of £180.80 to
support the work of CAFOD and our sister agency, Caritas Iraq. More than
£200.000 was spent helping Caritas Iraq to prepare for the onset
of war. Doctors, staff and volunteers at 14 centres across Iraq have received
training from military doctors experienced in dealing with war injuries,
and centres were equipped with vital medical supplies and ambulances.
Since the end of the war CAFOD has provided funds to send in convoys of
additional medical and essential supplies to Basra and Baghdad and it
is likely that CAFOD will need to continue to provide funding for long-term
rehabilitation programmes. Once again, thank you for caring about the
situation which is still affecting so many Iraqis, please continue to
pray for them.” (Judith Rees, Head of Supporter Services).

THE UNION
Thought for the Week
In today’s Gospel Jesus says: “You must come away…(with
me) to some lonely place all by yourselves and rest for a while”.
Then Mark goes on to explain why Jesus said this to His disciples. So many
people were making so many demands on them that they didn’t even have
time to eat. This message is for all of us. We all need to take a holiday
occasionally to regain our perspective and to recharge our batteries. We
all need at least to take time off and put ourselves in touch with the core
of our being – and especially with God who dwells in the core of our
being. We all have a need for sanctuary in our lives. Some people
find this sanctuary early in the morning over a cup of coffee before the
family gets up. Others find it alone in a quiet room after the family has
gone to bed. Sanctuary can be found by simply switching the television off,
lighting a candle, then switching the living room light off for ten minutes
and sitting in peace. The important thing in all this is to find it. We
need to nourish our spirit in God’s presence so that we can continue
to do God’s work in the hectic rat race of our daily lives.
There’s a beautiful prayer called “Slow
Me Down, Lord” by Wilfred A. Peterson, which may help us to
slow down this summer. It reads: “Slow me down Lord. Slow me
down! Ease the pounding of my heart by the quieting of my mind. Give me
amid the confusion of my day the calmness of the everlasting hills. Break
the tensions of my nerves and muscles with the soothing music of the singing
streams that live in my memory. Help me to know the magical restoring
power of sleep. Teach me the art of slowing down to look at a flower,
to chat with a friend, to pat a dog, to read a few lines from a good book.
Remind me each day of the fable of the hare and the tortoise, that I may
know that the race is not always to the swift – that there is more
to life than increasing its speed. Let me look upward into the branches
of the flowering oak and know that it is great and strong because it grew
slowly and well. Slow me down Lord, and inspire me to send my roots deep
into the soil of life’s enduring values that I may grow toward the
stars of my greater destiny.”
Summer Holiday Arrangements
I will be on my annual summer break from 22nd July until 22nd August.
It is with great pleasure that we welcome back to our community Father
Manuel Gonzalez who has, once again, kindly agreed to supply in our parish.
Father Manuel will be arriving on Tuesday 22nd July and will remain with
us during August. I know that I can rely on you all to make him feel at
home!
Kathleen Gorman RIP
Please pray for the repose of the soul of Kathleen Gorman, who died recently.
Please also pray for Kathleen’s family and friends. Kathleen’s
funeral took place at St Philip Howard Church on 18th July.

them from across the parishes within Fareham Deanery. The next meeting
will be held this Monday 21st July, 7.30 – 9.00pm, in the
Upper Room at St Mary’s Hall, Mumby Road, Gosport. A warm welcome
will be extended to anyone concerned, whether they have come into the
Church recently or some time ago.

A reminder that new faces and old are all welcome to meet and eat on Monday
21st July at 7.00pm at 24 Radway Road, Shirley. It would be helpful if you

St. Jude’s Catholic Primary School
Vacancies for Foundation Governors
Bishop Crispian, who has absolute discretion in the appointment of Foundation
Governors, is seeking applications from committed baptised Catholics who
wish to be considered for the above vacancies. In addition to the legal
responsibilities of the Governing Body, the Foundation Governors have
a responsibility for preserving the religious character of the school,
sustaining and developing the school as a Catholic educating community
and giving clear witness as individuals, and as a team, to the Gospel
message and to the Church's teaching. Appropriate training is available
during the period of service (from 1 September 2003 until 31 August 2006).
Lack of experience in education in a Catholic school should not deter
anyone from applying if there is a genuine desire to serve the mission
of the Church. Application packs are available from the Parish Priest,
the School Office or the Department of Schools Governance, Park Place
Pastoral Centre, Winchester Rd. Wickham PO17 5HA. Closing date for receipt
of applications: 15th August.
