The Diocese
Bishop Crispian will be away from the Diocese from Monday 28th July until Friday 24th October. This is to be a time of rest, reading, prayer and recreation, so please remember the Bishop in your prayers. During Bishop Crispian’s absence, Mgr. Peter Doyle, V.G. will be in charge of the Diocese.

Lay Leadership
A position paper on “Lay Leadership” has been produced by members of the Diocesan Curia. They would like feedback on these ideas by the end of the summer. If you are concerned by the changes that need to take place in the Catholic Church, to compensate for the lack of priests in our parishes, please read and comment on this important paper. It is available on the parish website here and responses can be posted through the parish discussion board on this site.

Park Place Garden Party
“The Garden Party at Park Place on Sunday 13th July
was a happy, relaxed and successful afternoon. Approximately 200 tickets were sold. The Sisters and Friends of Park Place were delighted to welcome everyone who came with such a spirit of kindness, generosity and fun. A most sincere thank you to all who made the event possible with gifts of cakes, presents, produce, raffle prizes etc. A magnificent £3,500 was raised, included in which were donations of £1,800. This will help greatly the Sisters’ Mission in India and their current project for the education of women there. Many, many thanks for the wonderful support – and God’s blessing on you all.” Anne Gibbons

Catholic Church in Fareham and Portchester Newsletter
THE UNION
Thought for the Month
Think of people singing as they go about in some hot and exhausting job – at harvest time, say, or in the vineyard. They start celebrating in their happiness with the words of familiar songs. But they end up turning away from words and syllables, as if they were filled with so much happiness that they couldn’t put it into words, and they go off into the noise of “jubilation”. (69)

This kind of singing is a sound which means that the heart is giving birth to something it cannot speak of. And who better to receive such “jubilation” than the ineffable God – ineffable because you cannot talk about Him? And if you cannot talk about Him, and it is improper to keep silence why, what is there left to do but “jubilate” – with your heart rejoicing without words, and the immense breadth of your joy not rationed out in syllables? (80) – St. Augustine on Psalm 32
From Father Charles Aylward

Summer Holiday Arrangements
We welcome back to our community Father Manuel Gonzalez who has kindly agreed to supply in our parish once again during the summer period. Our choir in Fareham will have a well-earned break during the summer. Readers are asked to note that the Psalm and Alleluia will not be sung during the coming weeks. During the month of August the Sacred Heart Church will be closed during the day except for those times when Mass is being celebrated. Please remember that Children's Liturgy of the Word is taking a break and will resume on the 7th September. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament has now ceased and will resume in the Sacred Heart Church and in Our Lady of Walsingham Church on Monday 8th September 2003. I would like to wish everyone, who is taking a holiday, a relaxing and refreshing time with safe and comfortable travel. For those unable to take holidays, I hope this time of year brings an opportunity for some rest and recreation.
Father Chris Whelan

Induction of Fr. Chris Whelan – a Message from the Liturgy Group
On Friday 5th September 2003 we are having a Parish Celebration to welcome Father Chris as Parish Priest of Fareham and Portchester and to mark the 125th Anniversary of the opening of the Sacred Heart Church. As part of the Liturgy, we will be thanking God for the richness of life in our Parish. In order to illustrate this we will be covering a tree with leaves. Each leaf will bear the name of a Parish Group and it is hoped that every Group will be represented at the Celebration. Leaders of the various Groups are asked to arrange for one of their Group to participate in this part of the Service. The Representative should check in with Frankie Lane or Sheelagh Pickard at 7.15pm, when the organisational details will be confirmed.

Hampshire Network of Local Groups is working for a GM free Hampshire and there is currently a petition circulating amongst the groups. Come Let us Worship
On 9th October at Ferneham Hall, Church leaders from across the Borough are planning a Praise and Worship evening for all the churches within the Borough. The evening will major on sung worship, but will also include some drama, dance, readings and a “creative corner” for those who wish to express worship through painting or writing. It will conclude with a simple “fellowship meal” and prayer for our Borough. Please make a date to join with hundreds of other Christians to praise God together and strengthen our unity.

Holiday Season at The Well
Volunteers take holidays too! Would you use any of your holiday to plug the gap? If you want to support The Well, but do not want to make a longer-term commitment, this could be the best way to do it. Could it be that you could help, but only in the holiday season? For whatever reason, if there is a chance, give them a ring on 01329 318731.
