THE UNION
Thought for the Week
As with all the miracles performed by Jesus, the healing of the
deaf and dumb man in today’s Gospel can teach us all something about
Jesus and our own relationship with Him. Describing some of the signs that
will take place when the Messiah comes, Isaiah says in today’s first
reading that when the Messiah comes, “The ears of the deaf [will
be] unsealed…and the tongues of the dumb sing for joy.”
By healing the deaf and dumb man, therefore, Jesus fulfils two of the signs
that will help people recognise Him as the Messiah.
This miraculous healing also teaches us something personal
about Jesus. We see this, especially, in the way He heals the man. Deaf
people are often embarrassed by their situation. As a result they often
feel different and out of place. Jesus shows real sensitivity towards
this man’s condition by taking him off, away from the crowd, and
healing him. And so, besides pointing to Jesus as the Messiah, the healing
of this man points to Jesus as a compassionate person.
Finally, the healing in today’s Gospel can reveal
the solution to the problem that many of us can experience ourselves.
When we find it more and more difficult to talk to God or listen to Him
speak to us in our hearts, then we are in danger of becoming spiritually
deaf and dumb. However, if this happens, we need only do what the deaf
and dumb man did. We need only to seek out Jesus, go off with Him, away
from the crowd, spend some time in His presence and allow Him to touch
us, heal us, and make us whole once again.
