Papers
Denis will be unavailable during the weekends of 15th, 22nd
and 29th August. A volunteer distributor is needed for those dates. It
is not an onerous job; just needs common sense. Denis will be pleased
to show you the ropes. The alternative is that he will have to cancel
all papers for those three weeks, and no-one wishes that to happen. Please
see Denis at 9.00am Mass or tel. 01329 288638. Perhaps 2 or 3 people could
cover the dates between them.
Home Helps
Urgently Needed
Our Home Helps have a vital role in assisting older people to remain
happy in their homes. Fareham MOPS is the largest group in Hampshire with
475 clients but we are critically short of home helps. Typically
home helps work for 1-2 hours a week for each of 1 to 10 clients; they
can take on as few or as many clients as required. Salary: £5 per
hour, duties include light housework but not personal care or cooking.
Police checks via the CRB will be undertaken. For more information please
contact Fareham Home Help on 01329 313113.
A Thought
from the Catholic
Bible School Web-site
“All that we send into the lives of others, comes back
into our own.”
Special
Envoy
Made public recently was a Letter by the Pope, written in Latin, in which
he appointed Cardinal Franciszek Macharski, Archbishop of Krakow, Poland
as his Special Envoy to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the
consecration of the Basilica of Lisieux on 11th July. Pope John Paul II
recalls in the letter that on 19th October 1997 he proclaimed St. Therese
of Lisieux as a Doctor of the Church.
“Connected”

THE UNION
Thought for the Week
The story of the Good Samaritan is a well-known one. We have usually concentrated
on the Good Samaritan giving physical help to the injured man by the binding
up of his wounds and the pouring out of oil and wine. This injured man
would also have been psychologically hurt firstly by the attitude of the
robber and then by the priest and Levi who passed him by. By physically
helping, the Good Samaritan also poured out his love and concern to heal
the man’s psychological and emotional wounds.
Many who hurt us,
do so because they have possibly been wounded psychologically at some
stage of their life. The best medicine for these persons is to give them
love. We all know that it is not easy to give this sort of medicine and
it could even be draining if the person who is hurt continues to hurt
us as we try to help. Wouldn’t it be a great act of healing, if
we can give love to heal people’s wounds rather than always seeking
help from others? It would be really wonderful if we could help someone
who was down to rise up again. ‘Whatever you do to the least of
my brethren you do it to me’ says Jesus.

Hospitals and the Data Protection Act
The Patients’ Charter requires Hospital authorities to
care for the religious and spiritual needs of their patients, while the
Data Protection Act forbids those authorities to pass sensitive personal
data, like religious affiliation of patients, to chaplains unless the
individual patient has expressly requested this. Therefore, when parishioners
are admitted to hospital they should make sure that they tell the hospital
staff taking their details that they are Catholics, and express their
wish that this information be passed to the Roman Catholic Chaplain. Those
responsible for children or for those who are unconscious when admitted
should do likewise.
UCM
The UCM would like to thank all those who supported their Nearly New Sales.
They raised £150.00 for their charity.

2004.
MS
Challenge 2004 (from Frankie Moorhen)
“This year I will be taking part in the MS Challenge.
The MS (multiple sclerosis) challenge consists of a team of between 8
& 12 people carrying a person in a wheelchair around a 10 mile course
around Mt. Snowdon in Wales. The main aim of all this is to raise much-needed
funds for MS centres all over the country. However, it also gives the
person with MS a chance to experience things that the disease would not
normally allow them to share in. At 14 years of age, I am going to be
the youngest person in my team (the Pompey all-sorts!). I would be very
grateful for any sponsorship that you would be willing to give me. There
are sponsor forms at the back of the churches. Thank you in advance for
any support I may receive.” (Frankie Moorhen)
