THE UNION Thought for the Week
The point of the remarks that Jesus makes in today’s Gospel, should
cut deeply into each one of us ~ worldly people are more willing to sacrifice
for worldly rewards than Christians are for heavenly rewards. This is
true in so many, many cases. We need to ask ourselves, “Are we
less willing to sacrifice for a heavenly reward than we are for a worldly
reward?”, and “Are we less willing to sacrifice for
the spread of the Gospel than we are for our own worldly advancement?”
If we are, then we will want to pray the following prayer with special
devotion:
“Lord, open
our ears to your word even when we’d rather not listen to it
because it challenges us more than we want to be challenged.
Lord, open our minds to your word even when we’d rather not think
about it;
because it disturbs us more than we want to be disturbed.
Lord, help us put your word into practice even when we’d rather
not act on it,
because it means changing what we’d rather not change.
Above all, Lord, help us to realise that you never ask us to do anything
that you won’t bless us for beyond our wildest dreams.
You are never outdone in generosity. Amen.”
These changing times
are challenging and disturbing to many people in the Church today. On
this Home Mission Sunday, we are reminded that Bishop Crispian wants all
the people in his diocese to tell him what is important to them about
the Church, how best can we spread the Gospel, and what needs to be changed
and what needs to remain the same. To find out more on how he wants us
to do this, please come to a meeting on Thursday 23rd September at 7.30pm
in St. Jude’s School.

Faith Festival Update
Thousands are overwhelmed with cares and fears about security in life
and their own mortality. Putting us Christians into face-to-face with
these people could change their lives. The Faith Festival will run for
10 days, 28th May to 5th June next year. Already planned are event-packed
days which show the public that Christians are cheerful, friendly and
above all happy and fulfilled. Young and old will present and participate
in many aspects of church life, but in and around the Precinct –
welcoming with refreshment, dealing with inquiries and handing out literature.
There will be musical buskers and entertainers, sing-alongs, jazz and
rock bands, skateboarding flower workshops, break dancing, drama and of
course, prayer and praise. We have the London Gospel Choir to kick-off
our ‘long week’ and that is just the beginning. Reading this
some of you may be moved to make suggestions for events and offer your
services to help. Please contact the Parish Office and we will contact
you in due course. Please pray that this missionary Festival will spread
the Good News of Jesus in our Town.
