THE UNION Thought for the Week
In the story of the poor man Lazarus in our Gospel this week we are simply
reminded that how we live now will determine our reward at the end of
time. This parable should pull us up short to ask those searching questions,
“Who is my neighbour?” What are their needs?” We are
called to take stock of how we care for those around us. The Lord in the
first reading from the prophet Amos asks the question even starker, “Are
we bothered about others?”
How are
we to live then? Well St Paul in his first letter to Timothy, as given
as our second reading, spells a pattern of life for us – the way
our life should be if we are ‘dedicated to God.’ We should
be ‘saintly and religious, filled with faith and love, patient and
gentle’ striving to model our lives on Christ Jesus.
May our
lives radiate the love of Christ so that we may find our home in him now,
and at the end of time.
We give
thanks too for the Church communities to which we belong that help and
nurture our faith. Congratulations to the community of Our Lady of Walsingham
in Portchester whose 50th Anniversary celebrations occur this weekend.
We thank God that the Church in Portchester has been a sign of Christ’s
love in the area and a place for many to draw closer to the Lord.
