THE UNION
Thought for the Week
One night, a man was out fishing in a small rowboat in a harbour. It was
late, and everything was quiet except for a man on the deck of an anchored
yacht. The man had been drinking and, occasionally, bellowed out some
incoherent sentence, disturbing the stillness of the night. The fisherman
ignored him and concentrated on his fishing. Suddenly, the fisherman heard
a loud splash. He turned and, in the moonlight, saw that the man on the
yacht had toppled into the water. Stripping off his jacket, the fisherman
dived into the water and swam over to the man. After incredible effort,
he managed to get the man back on his yacht. It was then that the fisherman
saw that the man was barely breathing. Frantically, he gave the man artificial
respiration and got him breathing normally again. When the man seemed
to be alright, the fisherman put him to bed on the yacht and swam back
to his tiny rowboat.
The next
morning the fisherman returned to the yacht to see if the man needed any
help. The man was brusque and abusive. At this point, the fisherman reminded
him that he had risked his life the night before to pull him from the
water and save him. However, instead of thanking the fisherman, the man
shouted at him and ordered him off his yacht. As the fisherman rowed away
in his tiny boat, his eyes filled up with tears. He could not believe
what had just happened. Looking up to heaven, he prayed in words like
these: “Lord, now I know how you must feel. You gave your life
to save us. But like the man on that yacht, instead of thanking you, we
only show ingratitude. Now I know how you must feel, Lord! Now I know!
And it breaks my heart!” Let us neither be like that ungrateful
yachtsman, nor like the nine ungrateful lepers in today’s Gospel,
but always remember to thank Jesus for all He has done for us and our
world. In the words of George Herbert let us pray: “O Thou
who has given us so much, mercifully grant us one more thing – a
grateful heart.”

Growing
Together in Christ
Bishop Crispian is calling us to prepare for the future. In order to do
this we need to have four meetings in our parish. The first meeting entitled
‘Called to Holiness’ will take place on Thursday 21st October
at St Jude’s School at 7.30pm (7.00pm Tea and Coffee). Everyone
is encouraged to attend.
Growing
Together in Christ - the way forward
It is thought amongst the people who are retired, especially weekday
worshippers, that there may be sufficient numbers to be able to form a
group to discuss the Bishop’s initiative. The meeting would be in
the daytime; a suggested time is after the Tuesday Mass in the Sacred
Heart Hall but alternatives will be considered. If anyone is interested,
please leave your name and a contact number with either Michele or Joan
in the Parish Office.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
“The Holy Eucharist “is not merely the memory of an event
or the portrayal of a great figure; it is the fulfilment of our personal
relation to Christ, of the believer to his Redeemer….To wait for
Him, to invite Him, to go to receive and honour and praise Him, to be
with Him, drawn into the intimacy of Communion with Him – that is
the Christian feast” (Mgr. Romano Guardini).

A Message
from Roy Crowl
“Just a quick line to let you all know that I have settled
in very well at Plater College and that I have made various friends, both
male and female! Everyone here is so very helpful to you and do their
very best for your comfort. We started the new term on 4th October which,
as you know, is the feast day of Saint Francis, the name that I took when
I was Confirmed. I hope that this is a “lucky omen” to me
in the weeks to come!!! My first essay has to be returned by my next tutorial
which is Monday 11th October. It has to consist of no more than 1,000
words on “What is Theology and why is it so crucial! My regards
to all at our three churches: St Philip Howard, Sacred Heart and Our Lady
of Walsingham. You are all in my prayers. Regards to everyone. God bless
you all, Roy Crowl.”
