THE UNION
Thought for the Week
A few quotes on humility (taken from ‘Quotes and Anecdotes’
compiled by Anthony P. Castle):
Humility is the mother
of salvation.
(St Bernard)
The science of humility
rests upon the knowledge of God and of oneself.
(Archbishop Ullathorne)
There is
something in humility which strangely exalts the heart.
(Augustine of Hippo)
True humility
makes no pretence of being humble, and scarcely ever utters words of humility.
(St Francis de Sales)
Having read the last
quote, I felt I could hardly write any words from myself!!

Growing
Together in Christ
Bishop Crispian is calling us to prepare for the future. In
order to do this we need to have four meetings in our parish.
The second meeting entitled ‘Our Mission to live
out Communion’ will take place on Thursday 4th
November at St Jude’s School at 7.30pm (7.00pm Tea and
Coffee).
Everyone is encouraged to attend.
Father,
pour out your Spirit upon our diocese
and grant us a new vision of your glory,
a new experience of your power,
a new faithfulness to your Word
and a new consecration to your service,
so that your love may grow among us
and your kingdom come
through Christ our Lord. Amen

Mission Sunday
This Sunday we celebrate World Mission Sunday – the principal day
in the Church’s calendar for thinking about our commitment to proclaim
the good news to all people. The challenge of mission today is as great
as ever - it is the greatest concern of the universal Church. The command
to ‘Go, teach all nations’ is as imperative for our generation
as for any other since it was first issued; it has never been rescinded!
One of the most important elements in the on-going mission is pastoral
solidarity built out of our deep sense of communion. Mission Sunday is
our opportunity to express that collaboration as we remember especially
all those working in the overseas mission of the church. There will be
a collection after all Masses this weekend, please be as generous as you
can.
The
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
“Eucharist and Mission are inseparable. I invite you to live
World Mission Sunday this year with a true Eucharistic Spirit. The Eucharist
builds the Church and the Church makes the Eucharist. The mission of the
Church is a continuity of the Mission of Christ and draws spiritual energy
from communion with his Body and Blood” (taken from Pope John
Paul 11’s message for Mission Sunday).
On the
weekend of the 6th/7th November, Father John Edwards, SJ will celebrate
and preach at all three Masses in our churches of Our Lady of Walsingham
(Saturday 6.00pm); Sacred Heart (Sunday 9.00am) and St Philip Howard (Sunday
11.00am) in order to expand the hours of adoration and strengthen the
existing number of adorers at the Sacred Heart Church and Our Lady of
Walsingham Church. Contacts: Lily Peach on 077 678 98885, Veronica Reeves
on 023 9237 2864 or Rose Andrews on 023 9238 8494.
