THE UNION
Thought for the Week
“See you in Sydney, see you in Athens, see you in Tokyo.”
Some athletes are known to use this form of au revoir as they part. People
of faith, too, strive with continual effort for their prize of the vision
of God and they carry an album of memories with them. “Do this in
memory of ME.” We see, then, the wisdom of the Catholic tradition
in keeping the memory of the dead and the awareness of the living only
a short distance apart both in time and thought. It is very fitting and
encouraging – though only to be expected – to find the Eucharistic
Prayers of the Mass, each in its own way, taking a similar view and emphasising
the Communion of Saints. This is the common citizenry of the People of
God. It is helpful, here, to recall that the Feast of All Saints came
into liturgical existence only in the 7th century and then only as a Feast
of Our Lady and the Holy Martyrs on the 13th of May. By the 9th century
it was extended to include all the Saints and moved to 1st November.
The Eucharistic Prayer
II is a good example. It can be studied by all at their leisure. Among
other wonderful, inclusive and inviting ideas it places Mary linking the
dead and the living. She is mentioned first among the others to share
eternal life and by the true and basic standard test of doing God’s
will elevates our efforts to continue: “all the saints who have
done Your will throughout the ages.” “Anyone”, said
Jesus, “who does the will of my Father in Heaven; he is my brother
and sister and mother.”

Growing
Together in Christ
Bishop Crispian is calling us to prepare for the future. In
order to do this we need to have four meetings in our parish.
The second meeting entitled ‘Our Mission to live
out Communion’ will take place on Thursday 4th
November at St Jude’s School at 7.30pm (7.00pm Tea and
Coffee).
Everyone is encouraged to attend.
Father,
pour out your Spirit upon our diocese
and grant us a new vision of your glory,
a new experience of your power,
a new faithfulness to your Word
and a new consecration to your service,
so that your love may grow among us
and your kingdom come
through Christ our Lord. Amen

A Message from the Parish Ecology Group
“Our thanks to all who came and took part in the One World Service
and helped in different ways, especially in the hall afterwards. We had
displays from PEG and from Eye Contact who brought their display to show
us and our visitors from Fareham churches, the work they are doing and
where all the money raised has been spent. Adrian and Jan send their warm
greetings and thanks for all we have done. We raised the grand sum of
£46.72 - £40.00 of which came from the Service while the rest
was donated in The Well. We gave £26.72 to Eye Contact with the
other £20.00 going to the Franciscan Missions.
The Parish
Ecology Group has its last meeting of the year on Friday 26th November
in the Sacred Heart Hall when we have a speaker from CAFOD. Mince pies
and mulled wine will be served from 7.30pm. All are invited.
Fareham
Christian Ecology Link sends an invitation to all ecologists to the planning
meeting at Holy Trinity Church on 9th December at 7.30pm. Again all are
invited.
As St. Francis
always said: ‘May the Lord bless you and keep you.’”
The
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
“Eucharist and Mission are inseparable. I invite you to live
World Mission Sunday this year with a true Eucharistic Spirit. The Eucharist
builds the Church and the Church makes the Eucharist. The mission of the
Church is a continuity of the Mission of Christ and draws spiritual energy
from communion with his Body and Blood” (taken from Pope John
Paul 11’s message for Mission Sunday).
On
the weekend of the 6th/7th November, Father John Edwards, SJ will celebrate
and preach at all three Masses in our churches of Our Lady of Walsingham
(Saturday 6.00pm); Sacred Heart (Sunday 9.00am) and St Philip Howard (Sunday
11.00am) in order to expand the hours of adoration and strengthen the
existing number of adorers at the Sacred Heart Church and Our Lady of
Walsingham Church.
