THE UNION
Thought for the Week
‘Jesus,
remember me when you come into your kingdom.’
‘Indeed, I promise you, today you will be with in paradise.’
These two pieces of
texts one from the good thief upon the cross and one from Jesus are essential
to coming to understand a little more deeply the feast we celebrate today.
Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the one who through the mystery of His
life, death and resurrection has brought all things together in himself,
as St Paul explains to us in psalm form in our second reading. Jesus is
the one calling us into His kingdom, of paradise, heaven, to be with Him
– our honesty in the assessing our lives, like that of the good
thief, will too gain us eternal life.

Advent
Appeal 2004
Next Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent (Year A) and our Advent
Appeal this year is in aid of the Rainbow Centre, in Fareham, which exists
primarily to help children with motor impairment learn to overcome their
difficulties using a system of learning called Conductive Education. Motor
impairment means difficulty with movements controlled by the central nervous
system and the most common cause of this is cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy
is a condition caused through lack of oxygen to the brain during pregnancy,
during the delivery, or after the birth. The Rainbow Centre was established
in 1990 to provide a special system of learning and since this time has
helped over 300 children from seven of the southern counties. It provides
for pre-school children and also provides a Saturday Club for school-aged
children as well as individually tailored sessions.

Bembridge, Voluntary Services Co-ordinator on 023 8047 5312.

PEG meeting of 2004, which will take place at Sacred Heart Hall on Friday

there will be a pre-Advent party with mince pies, soft drinks and coffee
and tea, as well as fairly traded goods. The evening begins at 7.30pm
with prayers, followed by the CAFOD talk.
Growing
Together in Christ
Bishop Crispian is calling us to prepare for the future. In
order to do this we need to have four meetings in our parish.
The third meeting entitled ‘Everyone is gifted by
the Holy Spirit’ will take place on Thursday
25th November at St Jude’s School at 7.30pm (7.00pm
Tea and Coffee).
Everyone is encouraged to attend.
Father,
pour out your Spirit upon our diocese
and grant us a new vision of your glory,
a new experience of your power,
a new faithfulness to your Word
and a new consecration to your service,
so that your love may grow among us
and your kingdom come
through Christ our Lord. Amen

Ethics
and Information
Speaking recently in Rome, Archbishop John Foley spoke of communications
today and said: “for us, the limits of communication should be truth,
the dignity of the individual and the common good. Thus the first principle
is, ‘Never tell a lie’ – for any person or for any cause.
The second principle is that the dignity of the person should never be
violated…..The third principle is that all communication should
contribute to the common good, not detract from it.”

Co-Workers
of Mother Teresa – (Missionary Sisters of Charity
“Thank you to all those who contributed items of clothing for India
and St Dismas. Only cottons and light weight woollens can be sent to India,
as well as blankets and sheets. We now have a problem, in that due to
the rise in fuel prices, the cost of sending sacks of items to India has
almost doubled. We would be very grateful for any financial support to
meet the increased expense. There is a box, with a slot, in the wall of
the porch of the Sacred Heart Church or, alternatively, the envelope system
can be used stating how much in the envelope is for the Co-workers of
Mother Teresa. With many thanks, Anne Lewis”
