THE UNION
Thought for the Week
Lent
and Eastertide belong together. They should not be separated as different
and separate seasons. We fasted for Lent we should feast for Eastertide.
40 days for one, 50 for the other.
The late Dominican
theologian, Herbert McCabe, in his book ‘God, Christ and Us’
makes this perception insight: “Easter is not a cancellation of
the cross. It does not, in any important sense, celebrate anything different
from the cross. It is the meaning of the Cross.” Of course there
were two events: a crucifixion and, later, a rising from the dead. But
these two events are part of a single story with a single meaning. The
resurrection is as inseparable from the crucifixion as the punch line
from the rest of the story. Easter and its long celebration is how to
look at the cross. It is how faith looks at the cross.

Prayer
for Pope Benedict XVI
God
our Father, shepherd and guide,
look with love on Pope Benedict XVI, your servant, the pastor of
your Church.
May
his word and example,
inspire and guide the Church, and may he,
and all those entrusted to his care,
come to the joy of everlasting life.
Grant
this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God for ever and ever.
Amen
