THE UNION
Thought for the Week
Our
readings continue to reflect the Ascension of the Lord, the feast that
we celebrated on Thursday. Our readings express loss, on the part of the
apostles, yet gladness in that Christ has been glorified. This is a gladness
that we are all to share when we to are to pass from this world and join
Jesus in heaven.
The great mystery
of life, death and eternal glory is felt each time we experience the death
of a loved one. As Christians, as we gather at someone’s passing
of this life there is sadness, yet joy as family and friends remember
the life of one they have loved: sadness comes as we confront the loss,
joy comes as we recall that Christ has called them to himself, a place
where we too will surely follow and where we yearn to meet them in that
kingdom of ‘light, happiness and peace.’
As we reflect on the
apostles in the upper room waiting for the strength of the Holy Spirit
given at Pentecost, let us pray with them for all those who struggle in
coming to terms with the loss of those they loved.
Loving and merciful
God, we entrust all who have died to your mercy. You loved them greatly
in this life: now that they are freed from all its cares, give them happiness
and peace for ever. The old order has passed away: welcome them into paradise
where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only
peace and joy with Jesus, your Son and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.
Amen.

Bill
Davison RIP
Betty would like to share with the Parish, the following from Cardinal
Cormac Murphy-O’Connor:
“Dear Betty,
I have just heard the sad news of Bill’s death on 19th April and
that he was being buried yesterday. I just want to offer you my deepest
sympathy and promise of my prayers for the repose of his soul. My days
in the Sacred Heart Parish are a long time ago now but I remember them
with much affection and, of course, you and Bill as well. So, again, you
have my profound sympathy and promise of prayers for you and the family
at this sad time.
With kindest wishes,
Yours devotedly in Christ, +Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, Archbishop of
Westminster.”
