Fareham
Faith Festival – 27th May to 5th June
Enclosed with this week’s newsletter is a form asking for volunteers
to help with the Fareham Faith Festival. As you will see, help is needed
in setting-up the tents every day and dismantling them again and helping
with the distribution of Christian literature from the tents. It is also
hoped to raise a Parish Team for the inter-church ‘It’s a
Knockout’ competition from 1.30pm on Sunday 29th May in the Leisure
Centre. If you are over 16 and reasonably fit, please volunteer. Contact
Roger Chadwick on 01489 584250.

Blessed
Margaret Pole, 1473-1541
There will be a concert in celebration of the life of Bl. Margaret Pole
on her feast day, 28th May, at St Thomas a Becket Church, Warblington
at 7.30pm. Margaret was daughter of the Duke of Clarence, niece of King
Edward IV and King Richard III. She married Sir Reginald Pole in 1491
and had five children, one of whom became a Cardinal. He wrote against
Henry VIII’s presumptions to spiritual supremacy and the King decided
to crush the family. Two of Margaret’s sons were executed in 1538
for the crime of being the brothers of the Cardinal. In her later years
Margaret lived at Warblington Castle. She was falsely charged with plotting
revolution and was beheaded in 1541. Music of that period will be played
at the concert with the Wyndcliffe Voices and the Lazy Lane Mynstrels
who will be directed by Philip Drew. The delightful church on the harbour’s
edge between Havant and Emsworth, was where Margaret was arrested and
taken to the Tower via Midhurst. Tickets for the concert cost £5.00
and all proceeds will go towards the church restoration fund. Reservation
is advisable by telephoning 023 9248 4000 or 023 9245 3357.

If a dream is like a letter, then it is God who sends it so as to deepen
the relationship he has with us. Dreamwork is the process by which we
open the letter, read it and find ways to respond to it. This day weeks
to apply the insights of modern psychology to this ancient tradition.

THE UNION
Thought for the Week
It is itself
almost a miracle of scholarship and faith for a well-educated Gentile
Greek who later became a convert to Christianity and a disciple and companion
of St Paul to have composed our first Reading for Pentecost Sunday
Without the background
of Jewish belief and culture but a keen and meticulous explorer of truth,
Luke would have found himself in a small community wherever he turned
for facts. The oldest people in this Brotherhood had witnessed or known
from now deceased elders the facts of the life and Passion, death and
resurrection of Jesus from the dead and His Ascension into Heaven. This
small community had its memories. In fact they held a pool of memories
which oversaw and checked the earliest records which were later to form
the Gospel accounts by Matthew, Mark and Luke himself.
Meanwhile, Luke could
explore the Hebrew Scriptures. He would have been impressed by the awe-inspiring
events that accompanied the first giving of the Law on Mt. Sinai. The
community would easily have remembered the preaching of St Peter and St
Stephen after the Jewish feast of Pentecost and the heart-searching effects
it had on its Jewish listeners. There would have been many converted Jewish
priests who themselves could have shared with Luke how their hearts were
burning within them as the Scriptures were explained to them.
Luke would have quickly
come to the conclusion that this New Way born of the boldness and spirited
first Pentecostal preaching deserved a description in terms of the First
Sinai, hence our First Reading this weekend. Hence our Catholic insistence
on Tradition oral and written as well as Holy Scripture and the Teaching
of the Apostolic Church.
‘What we have
seen and heard, what our eyes have looked upon and our hands have handled
of the Word of Life – this is what we have preached to you.’
(1st Letter of St John I v. 1 old translation)
