August
Newsletter
As in past years, there will be one newsletter published for the month
of August, rather than one each week. This will be published on the weekend
30th/31st July. If you have an item for inclusion in that newsletter,
please ensure that it is given to the Parish Office by noon on Wednesday
27th July.
World
Youth Day 2005
This summer will see the celebration of the 20th World Youth Day which
takes place in Cologne, from 16th to 21st August. The World Youth Day
Cross has been passed from the youth of Canada to the youth of Germany.
The theme is “We have come to worship Him” and in the Cathedral
in Cologne are honoured the relics of the Magi, the Wise Men from the
East who followed the star which led them to Christ.
Hospital
Stay
Should you or a member of your family be taken into hospital for a routine
operation or rest care, please let us know at the Parish Office. Although
you may register your details at the hospital and include your religion
as Catholic, this information is not automatically relayed to the Parish.
The same applies if you are taken into hospital as an emergency. A relative
or friend needs to let us know. If you are moved to another ward, this
is not automatically conveyed to us, and even upon inquiry at your original
ward, they will not necessarily tell us to where you have been moved.
If the hospital authorities fail to offer you the opportunity of spiritual
support, they are contravening the NHS guidelines for the spiritual needs
of patients and staff. Please also let us know when you have returned
home. Visits can be arranged and Holy Communion brought to you at home,
but only if we know you have been released from hospital.
Paws
for thought!!!!
A young missionary served in a remote part of Africa with few resources.
One day, unarmed, he was walking through the bush when he was confronted
by a lion. He knelt in prayer, hands clasped, and after a few moments
opened one eye and saw that the lion was kneeling down and had his paws
clasped. “My goodness,” he said in relief, “are you
a Christian too?” “Yes, certainly,” the lion replied,
“I was just saying grace.”

THE UNION
Thought for the Week
The total disrespect for human life demonstrated by the horrendous bomb
attacks in London on Thursday 7th July, has brought much anger, misery
and mourning to the people of Great Britain. It is difficult to comprehend
that only the previous day there was such excitement, happiness and joy
in London with the winning of the Olympic bid for 2012. The contrast of
those two days has left many people of this country in a state of shock
but, by their bravery, the people of Great Britain have shown the world
that those who wish to terrorise us by killing innocent civilians with
evil methods will not succeed. However, it is not for us to judge, as
God will hold each of us accountable for our own actions at the end of
time. In the meantime, we must try to forgive our enemies and continue
to pray every day for peace and be reassured with the words of Jesus:
“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill
the soul; fear him rather who can destroy both body and soul in hell.”
(Matthew 10:28)
Father
Chris
Fr. Patrick
Kenna SDB
Please pray for the repose of the soul of Fr. Patrick Kenna who died recently,
aged just 49 years. Fr. Patrick will be known to some of you as he concelebrated
with Fr. Chris at the First Holy Communion Masses of his nephew Andrew
Martins and his nieces Madelaine and Holly Martins. Please pray also for
all Fr. Pat’s family and friends.
Good
News Travelling Library
The Good News van will be visiting 22 Castle Street, Portchester on
Thursday 28th July from 7.00pm to 8.30pm. This Library visits Portchester
twice each month, on the 4th Thursday and 2nd Wednesday. There are religious
books etc. to borrow and cards on sale. Filmed at over 200 Holy Land sites,
the travelling library video: ‘Jesus – the Man behind the
Millennium’, tells the familiar story through the words of Luke’s
Gospel. An emphasis upon realism, means that the cave/stable is earthy;
the shepherds are rough and Jesus has to push his way through the crowds.
A real dove settles upon Christ’s shoulders after He is baptized,
there is doubt in Peter’s eyes as he scoops in the fishes and passing
camels form a back drop to the ‘eye of a needle’ comment.
The crucifixion is harrowing. This video has been seen by 1.25 billion
people. Will you borrow it next?
Fair

be given later. Watch this space!

Musical Evening in aid of three year old Ben
There will be a musical evening on Friday 2nd September at 7.30pm
at Our Lady of Walsingham Church, Portchester in aid of three
year old Ben, who two years ago was electrocuted in a tragic accident
and died for fifty minutes before being brought back to life.
Doctors thought he would be unable to do anything but, thank God,
with prayers and help from the Rainbow Centre and, of course,
dedicated parents, he is communicating and is a wonderful little
character. Please come and support them. Ben’s father
plays piano beautifully and will be playing at the concert.
