World Youth
Day 2005
This summer will see the celebration of the 20th World Youth Day which
takes place in Cologne, from 16th to 21st August. The World Youth Day Cross
has been passed from the youth of Canada to the youth of Germany. The theme
is “We have come to worship Him” and in the Cathedral in Cologne
are honoured the relics of the Magi, the Wise Men from the East who followed
the star which led them to Christ.
Hospital
Stay
Should you or a member of your family be taken into hospital for a routine
operation or rest care, please let us know at the Parish Office. Although
you may register your details at the hospital and include your religion
as Catholic, this information is not automatically relayed to the Parish.
The same applies if you are taken into hospital as an emergency. A relative
or friend needs to let us know. If you are moved to another ward, this
is not automatically conveyed to us, and even upon inquiry at your original
ward, they will not necessarily tell us to where you have been moved.
If the hospital authorities fail to offer you the opportunity of spiritual
support, they are contravening the NHS guidelines for the spiritual needs
of patients and staff. Please also let us know when you have returned
home. Visits can be arranged and Holy Communion brought to you at home,
but only if we know you have been released from hospital.
PEG
The PEG Art competition advertised on our notice boards is open to children.
The PEG Annual Mass takes place at Sacred Heart Church on Friday 23rd
September 2005 – more details to follow.

THE UNION
Thought for the Month
There are six Gospel accounts of the multiplication of the loaves. This
shows what great importance the early communities attach to this miracle.
It is also the only miracle in which Jesus directly associated his disciples.
A striking summary of what will later be their function in the Church
is contained in the command Jesus gives them: “Give them something
to eat yourselves.” The disciples had thought at first that they
would be able to pass on to others the task of feeding the hungry crowds.
Instead it is they who must do it with their slender supplies of loaves
and fishes. They have to recognize their own powerlessness. A real act
of worship takes place in which Jesus is the central figure and the disciples
are the necessary ministers: the bringing of offerings, their presentation,
the act of thanksgiving over the gifts, their distribution by Jesus to
the Apostles and by them to the crowds.
Place this
act of worship in any suitable building or, if need be, in the open today
and it looks gratifyingly identical to our Parish Saturday/Sunday Masses.

IMPORTANT
NOTICE
Father Chris and Father Andrew will be leaving the Parish
for pastures new in September and October. As everyone will know

and for Father Andrew on 20/21st August. Some may
be away on holiday at these times, so if you are and wish to contribute,
please put your gift into an envelope and mark it either Father
Chris or Father Andrew and pop it into the Parish Office or the
collection plate.
Both priests have served us well so let us say a very big ‘thank
you’ to both of them and make 9th September a date they will
remember. |

Musical Evening in aid of three year old Ben
There will be a musical evening on Friday 2nd September at 7.30pm
at Our Lady of Walsingham Church, Portchester in aid of three
year old Ben, who two years ago was electrocuted in a tragic accident
and died for fifty minutes before being brought back to life.
Doctors thought he would be unable to do anything but, thank God,
with prayers and help from the Rainbow Centre and, of course,
dedicated parents, he is communicating and is a wonderful little
character. Please come and support them. Ben’s father
plays piano beautifully and will be playing at the concert.
