Children’s Liturgy of the Word
Children’s Liturgy of the Word recommences this weekend.

Thank you:
From Barbara and Richard Taggerty

“To Father Chris and everyone who helped at Andrea and Hannah Taggerty’s First Holy Communion. A big thank you to Joan and Lyn – Lyn the cake was really nice and thank you all for the food. With all our love, Barbara, Richard and girls.”

From Anne Corr
“I would like to say thank you for your prayers, cards and flowers. They are very much appreciated.”

Hospital Stay
Should you or a member of your family be taken into hospital for a routine operation or rest care, please let us know at the Parish Office. Although you may register your details at the hospital and include your religion as Catholic, this information is not automatically relayed to the Parish. The same applies if you are taken into hospital as an emergency. A relative or friend needs to let us know. If you are moved to another ward, this is not automatically conveyed to us, and even upon inquiry at your original ward, they will not necessarily tell us to where you have been moved. If the hospital authorities fail to offer you the opportunity of spiritual support, they are contravening the NHS guidelines for the spiritual needs of patients and staff. Please also let us know when you have returned home. Visits can be arranged and Holy Communion brought to you at home, but only if we know you have been released from hospital.

Friends of the Homeless Basics Bank

The Basics Bank, run by the Friends of the Homeless in Fareham and Gosport, has been burgled and their supplies of food and toiletries taken. They desperately need to replace these items so they can continue to help those who are referred to them by various agencies for emergency assistance. They need tinned food, such as tinned meats, potatoes and rice pudding, packet foods such as pasta and rice; UHT milk, toilet rolls and toiletries such as soap, disposable razors, shower gel and shampoo. Unfortunately, they cannot store perishable goods. Please could you look through your cupboards and see what you could contribute. Perhaps you have some unwanted toiletries which you received for your birthday or Christmas and don’t know what to do with? Maybe whilst shopping this week you could buy something extra or donate the free item from the ‘Buy One Get One free’ offer? We will be collecting items at Mass next weekend (10th/11th). Many thanks, Kevin and Elaine Taylor (01329) 511478.

Tools for Self-reliance
This is a charity based at Netley Marsh near Southampton. It works with partner organisations in Africa to provide craftsmen and women with tools and skills training so that communities can become self reliant and able to care for themselves and their neighbours. Kits for various trades e.g. carpenters, blacksmiths, shoemakers and metal workers are sent out so that village people can set up their own small factories and provide employment for their communities. The kits are assembled at Netley Marsh and shipped out to many countries in Africa and money is needed to pay for transportation. People are welcome to visit the workshops at Netley Marsh and see for themselves all the work being done and the kind of tools needed – just call 023 8086 9697 and let them know that you are coming.

Ghassan Manasra, a teacher of Sufism, directs the Muslim peace centre, Anwar il Salaam in Nazareth and Jerusalem. Catholic Church in Fareham and Portchester Newsletter
THE UNION
Thought for the Week

In the Acts of the Apostles, we see the early community functioning. Peter facilitated the meeting and after seeking God’s will in prayer, the group reached a decision together. Today’s Gospel gives a vital clue about the nature of that authority: “Where two or three meet in my name, I shall be with them.” The authority is from God (not power which has connotations of autonomy, but authority is often delegated), it does not rest in dogma or in structure, but in the person of Christ, who is the truth. In so far as the Church speaks in Him, it speaks with authority. When certain things go against what Christ’s Church stands for, the Church is not to stand back and say that it does not matter. It does matter. This is a grave responsibility for the Church and to do anything else would be to suggest that our salvation does not matter. But the Church cannot set itself up as judge – that is God’s role and we leave the final judgment to Him.

Father Tony Day
