Collections
We have many special collections for various charities and that is
good. As a caring Church we have shown that we never forget those in need,
not only through our prayers but also by our alms giving. There have been
a few occasions when competing second collections have taken place after
Sunday Mass. This is both confusing to those who give and unfair to the
charities themselves. Would all groups please remember that when there
is a special collection for a particular charity, no other collection
except the Offertory should be taken. Also all special collections must
be approved in advance through the Parish Office to avoid any confusion.
Hospital
Stay
Should you or a member of your family be taken into hospital for a routine
operation or rest care, please let us know at the Parish Office. Although
you may register your details at the hospital and include your religion
as Catholic, this information is not automatically relayed to the Parish.
The same applies if you are taken into hospital as an emergency. A relative
or friend needs to let us know. If you are moved to another ward, this
is not automatically conveyed to us, and even upon inquiry at your original
ward, they will not necessarily tell us to where you have been moved.
If the hospital authorities fail to offer you the opportunity of spiritual
support, they are contravening the NHS guidelines for the spiritual needs
of patients and staff. Please also let us know when you have returned
home. Visits can be arranged and Holy Communion brought to you at home,
but only if we know you have been released from hospital.

THE UNION
Thought
for the Week
We claim leopards can’t change their spots. We claim we can’t
teach an old dog new tricks. We claim it’s a woman’s prerogative
to change her mind. We usually say these things in jest because we don’t
really think change can happen or happens only to a select few. The gospel
this Sunday challenges this way of thinking. Part of the good news is
that there are no patterns that we can’t break out of. The point
is, we can change. Change is a matter of being saved.
This gospel
selection follows Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem; its context is the
escalating conflict between Jesus and the authorities. We can well imagine
that it doesn’t exactly help Jesus’ cause to be claiming that
tax collectors and prostitutes will enter the “kingdom of God”
ahead of the “chief priests and elders of the people.” The
parable Jesus tells makes a parallel between changing one’s mind
and changing one’s life and is quite pointed: believe, change, and
so be admitted to the kingdom of God.

The Adoration
of the Blessed Sacrament
“I
have often thought on the remedies for this life and the universal indifference
which is following so many Catholics and I find this icy cold death comes
from the absence of fire. I find the remedy, the only one, is the Eucharist,
the loving Lord. When we go to visit Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, His
love always surrounds us.” (St Peter Julian Eymard)
