From The Vatican
In the synod on the Eucharist, many bishops have dedicated their comments
to underlining the importance of adoration of the Body of Christ. According
to Bishop Jacques Perrier of Tarbes and Lourdes, Eucharistic adoration
has been a genuine “discovery,” as opposed to a rediscovery,
for many young French Catholics who participated in Cologne’s World
Youth Day in August. The prelate said that faith without understanding
the importance of Eucharistic adoration risks having a faith that is “individualistic
and not very ecclesial”, that is unable to adequately express itself;
and that “neglects other ways of the presence, real though different,
of the risen Christ,” as in the poor. He pointed out that young
people “cannot live without images,” and said that adoration
has “the immense advantage of being lived as a face to face.”
Cardinal Tauran reminded the synod’s participants that it is “before
the Eucharist that man recognises that he has need of the Other to give
him new energies for life’s combats.” “A world without
adoration,” he said, “would be no more than the world of production,
which would soon become unbreathable. A world without adoration is not
only irreligious – it is inhuman!”

THE UNION
Thought
for the Week
“Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs
to God.” This is an all-time solution both religious and secular,
for world peace. It has to be understood as a whole if all kinds of abuses
are to be avoided: abuses as in the time of Constantine, when the Church
respected the government in office because it was to her advantage, as
well as the abuses of modern ideologies which either have no place for
God or use Him to establish their own hold over society.
The Second
Reading has two calls on our special attention and cherishing. This letter
sent by Paul to his converts in Thessalonika is the earliest writing in
the whole of the New Testament. Moreover, it has lasting significance
for us because it portrays the Christian life under the sign of the Blessed
Trinity: to stand firm in hope thanks to Christ, in the presence of God
the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit.
As for
the Gospel it can be neatly present to us in the words and sentiments
of an English Martyr and good lawyer, Thomas More: “I am the King’s
good servant, but God’s first.”

at Our Lady of Walsingham Church on Saturday 22nd October, following 6.00pm
Mass. You are invited to come and celebrate the cultural diversity in
our Parish by bringing some food or drink that originates from your place
of origin for a shared supper. Please label your dish or drink with its
name and origin. We hope also to hold a quiz, so please bring a question
(and answer) from the area you are celebrating.
Anyone with musical talents, please come prepared to do your party piece
so that we can round off the evening with a short concert. Regional costume
is optional!!!
Any queries, please contact Annette Woolley – 01329 310091.
Shoeboxes
“The
very last day for leaving your shoeboxes at Sacred Heart Church is 10th
November this year. This is earlier than usual, so please remember when
you are shopping, and pop in an item or two for your box. You always do
well for less fortunate families and I am relying on your help again.
Many thanks, Marian. p.s. Please remember the £2.00 for costs, and
fill in the gift-aid part of the form.”
Great
South Run
Congratulations

collect his sponsorship money from those who pledged to support the LIFE
Infertility Programme. He will be collecting the money after all Masses
next weekend.

Jesus,
Light of the World
This is a Borough-wide celebration at Hallowe’en and takes place
at Ferneham Hall, Fareham on Monday 31st October at 7.30pm. This is for
all Christians, especially children, especially this night. No charge,
no tickets – just come.
Volunteers
needed!!
The Parish Youth Club urgently needs more adult helpers…the commitment
need not be great - just two hours on a Sunday evening about once a month.
The children of today are the Church of tomorrow so helping them keep
contact with the Church is worthwhile. It can also be fun. The Club is
run on an easy going, casual basis……Volunteers of any age
are welcome but it would be particularly helpful if we could have some
younger adults, aged 18+. If you can help contact John Monfort on 01489
583629 or Dan Russell on 01329 236779.

A
letter from Clarence House has been sent to us via Adopt Sri Lanka
“When I visited Sri Lanka earlier this year, I was fascinated to
learn at first hand about the work of “Adopt Sri Lanka” and
the ways in which it is contributing to the enormous task of rebuilding
communities which have been devastated by the tsunami. “Adopt Sri
Lanka’s” work is immensely valuable and so very important
to all those whose lives have been shattered by this tragic event. I was
particularly struck by the sensitive and practical ways in which “Adopt
Sri Lanka” is working with local communities to put them back on
their feet and to give them back their livelihoods. Above all, I was especially
impressed by “Adopt Sri Lanka’s” inclusive approach
and its determination to ensure that individuals receive assistance which
is appropriate to their circumstances and which respects their wishes
and traditions.
Over and above everything you have done, and the inspiration you have
given others, I very much hope that new partnerships with organisations,
such as my International Business Leaders’ Forum’s International
Tourism Partnership, will foster wider support for these vital recovery
projects and provide the assistance Sri Lanka and its people so desperately
need.
May I wish all of you at “Adopt Sri Lanka” every possible
success with your continuing efforts – efforts that have filled
me with the warmest possible admiration for the enormous difference you
are making to give new hope and purpose to so many people. Charles”
