THE UNION
Thought
for the Week
Community singing at all times – and particularly in stress situations
– is a natural and recognised way to raise people’s spirits.
In our first reading the Prophet Isaiah plays the cheer-leader and with
brazen exaggeration almost drugs his tortured people into holding fast
for the coming of the Promised One.
Welcome,
in this his Liturgical Year, to the first of St Mark’s Gospel. St
Mark believes that Jesus is the Messiah and Son of God. He says so in
his opening words. So also does the Roman officer towards the end of Mark’s
Gospel. This weekend, millions of Christians will be asked again: What
do you say?

Important
Announcement
Liturgies of the Word and Communion are exceptional services when
Mass is unavailable. During the Diocesan Assembly at Reading, it
was emphasized that these Liturgies should truly be exceptional
and not for convenience. In light of this we should not be having
them if there is already Mass on a particular day in the Parish.
At this Parish there is Mass every day of the week. Most non-Sunday
Masses are at Sacred Heart, the exception being Our Lady of Walsingham
on Fridays. In view of this we will no longer be having Liturgies
of Word and Communion on Fridays at Sacred Heart. However, there
will be Morning Prayer at this time, initially led by Deacon Langford.

next First Communion meeting is on Saturday 10th December at 10.00am at
St Jude’s School, with a celebration Mass on Sunday at 11.00am at
St Philip Howard Church.
Fr
Tony Day’s Silver Jubilee
On Saturday 10th December after the 6.00pm Mass at Our Lady of Walsingham,
there will be a simple two course meal to celebrate this joyous occasion.
So that we know how many to cater for would you please sign your name
on the lists at the back of the church against your choice of food –
chilli, vegetable chilli or chicken in white sauce; jacket or rice. There
will be a choice of sweets.
Christingle
Service
The children of St Jude’s School would like to invite you to the
Christingle Service which will be held this Sunday, 4th December, in St
Philip Howard Church at 4.00pm. Refreshments will be available afterwards.
Advent
Appeal Sale
There will be a Christmas chocolate tombola stall, cake stall and a raffle
after all Sunday Masses on the 17th and 18th December. If anyone would
like to donate cakes or chocolate, in any form, it would be very much
appreciated and can be left in the Parish Office or Sacred Heart Hall.
All proceeds to the Parish Advent Appeal.
Used
Postage Stamps
Thank you to everyone who has contributed used postage stamps. These have
been sent to the Scout Association to raise funds for the Trust that provides
holiday homes for handicapped Scouts (boys and girls). Please do continue
to put the stamps in the tin in the porch.
Volunteers
needed URGENTLY!!!
The Parish Youth Club urgently needs more adult helpers……the
commitment need not be great – just two hours on a Sunday evening
about once a month. The children of today are the Church of tomorrow so
helping them keep contact with the Church is worthwhile. It can also be
fun. The Club is run on an easy going, casual basis…….Volunteers
of any age are welcome but it would be particularly helpful if we could
have some younger adults, aged 18+. If you can help contact John Monfort
on 01489 583629 or Dan Russell on 01329 236779.

The Adoration
of the Blessed Sacrament
“Whenever
I go to the chapel, I put myself in the presence of our good Lord, and
I say to him, ‘Lord, I am here. Tell me what you would have me to
do’….And then, I tell God everything that is in my heart.
I tell him about my pains and my joys, and then I listen. If you listen,
God will also speak to you, for with the good Lord, you have to both speak
and listen. God always speaks to you when you approach him plainly and
simply.” (St Catherine Laboure).
