THE UNION
Thought
for the Week
The hard part of our Lenten journey is the dying to self. We like to hold on to our selfishness and self-centredness. We don’t like to admit that we are less than perfect. It is easy to find fault with others. Dying to self calls us to surrender ourselves to God, to be obedient even as Abraham was, to be willing to sacrifice everything, even our own future. Only when we embrace such a total surrender can we even begin to fathom the glory of the mountain top. As the letter to the Romans assures us, won’t the God who did not spare the only Son “give us everything else along with him?”
Lent is our time in the desert, to face our temptations and open ourselves to the Spirit who is always present to us to guide us and comfort us. If we journey well and purposefully, when we come to the glory of Easter morning we will see that the journey has brought us a joy that far outweighs any personal sacrifices we might have made along the way. But the best thing of all is that as we embrace conversion, we ourselves begin to take on the glow of the transfigured Christ. That glow is our gift to each other this Lent which encourages all of us along the way.

“For all my friends, the parishioners of Fareham and Portchester, from Valladolid: you are always in my thoughts and in my prayers. Your welcome in the summer of 2005 was splendid. God bless, Braulio Rodriguez Plaza, Bishop of Valladolid.”
Catholic TV Event has Web Page
The first World Congress of Catholic Television Stations, which will be held in Madrid next October, has a Web site: www.worldcongresstv.com. The initiative, convoked by the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, with the help of the host archdiocese, hopes to define “what it is to be Catholic on television” and to establish “a Catholic television network that will serve as a vehicle for the evangelising movement,” explains the page. The October convention expects to attract professionals of Catholic television stations from all over the world. A virtual linkup will be available throughout the event.
The Adoration
of the Blessed Sacrament
“It moves me to see how the joy of Eucharistic adoration is increasing throughout the Church, and how its fruits are appearing. During the period of liturgical reform, Mass and Eucharistic adoration outside of Mass were often seen as being in opposition. [However], receiving the Eucharist means adoring Him Whom we receive.” (Pope Benedict XVI, 22 December 2005)

School Transport
From September 2007, the County Council is considering the following possible changes to existing policy, ceasing to assist with transport for new entrants to denominational schools, introducing a charge of around £1.00 per day or limiting assistance to pupils in receipt of free school meals. Any of these changes could have a differential impact on recruitment to individual schools. Obviously, this will have a disastrous affect on our Catholic Schools in that it will mean that many parents will not be able to afford to send their children to them. You are asked to write to the following address, objecting to the proposals, by 31st March 2006: Mr Terry Rath, Education Officer, Hampshire County Council, County Office, Children’s Services Department, The Castle, Winchester, Hants. SO23 8UG.
