THE UNION

Thought for the Week
‘The very limit of human blindness is to glory in being blind’ Augustine of Hippo.

Statistics tells us that the number of people going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation has fallen drastically over the past decades. Is it possible that we may have developed a blind spot regarding this Sacrament or are we blind to our sinfulness and our need of God’s mercy? Jesus heals not only our physical blindness (man at the pool of Siloam) but also our spiritual blindness if only we turn to him.

Can we ignore his call to forgiveness as well as the opportunity to draw strength to live the Christian life? He calls us, he invites us to the Lenten Penitential Service (see details below). Do come along.

Parish Lenten Appeal
This year’s Lenten Appeal is in support of Adopt Sri Lanka. With so many families still living in temporary shelter fourteen months after the tsunami, it is hoped through our Appeal, to fund the building of a simple house for a most needy family in southern Sri Lanka. During this season of Lent, let us look beyond ourselves and look forward to helping the poor. Please help in any way you can to support this Appeal. Buckets will be at the back of each church after the weekend Masses during Lent.

Lent Breakfasts
All are most welcome to share in the simple breakfasts which will be served each Thursday during Lent in the Sacred Heart Hall, following the 7.00am Mass. All proceeds from these breakfasts will go towards the Parish Lenten Appeal in support of AdoptSri Lanka.

Lent Lunches
The Portchester Churches will be holding Shoppers’ Services and Lent Lunches every Wednesday in Lent beginning on Ash Wednesday, 1st March. The Services begin at 12.00 noon and take place at Portchester Methodist Church in Castle Street and are followed at 12.30pm by a simple lunch. Do support these lunches as all proceeds will be shared between CAFOD and Christian Aid. Catholics will be responsible for the lunch and service on 15th March.

Monks hailed for the “art of belonging”
“In today’s Europe of believing without belonging, where the family is fragile, monasteries teach the art of belonging to each other,” Cardinal Cormac told monks at Downside Abbey. The Cardinal spoke at a Mass on the community’s patronal feast day of St. Gregory, as part of the Benedictine Abbey’s 400th anniversary celebrations. He said a monastery “is not a flight from the fragility of human nature, but a way of meeting it and transforming it.” It is a place of “mutual caring and covenant relationships” where “people learn to relate, to love others, to meet the person behind the label……….” He praised the rule of St Benedict which he described as “a rock, but not a hard place.” He said he wished everyone could see the Church’s own rules and doctrines in the way that St Benedict intended his: “as gentle prods to change, not weights and burdens; and as lessons in the school of love.”

Seminaries are overcrowded in Vietnam
The Church in Vietnam needs new facilities to accommodate the increasing number of candidates to the priesthood. In the archdiocese of Thanh-Pho Ho Chi Minh there are 230 seminarians living in a small facility. Two reasons for the overcrowding are that the archdiocese receives candidates from six southern dioceses and that the government has stipulated that they allow all applicants to be admitted. In Hanoi, St Joseph’s Major Seminary supplies priests to eight northern dioceses and currently has 235 students. About 6 million of Vietnam’s 83 million inhabitants are Catholic.

Adoration of the Blessed SacramentThe Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
“The two sacraments of the Eucharist and Penance are very closely connected. Because the Eucharist makes present the redeeming sacrifice of the cross, perpetuating it sacramentally, it naturally gives rise to a continuous need for conversion, for a personal response to the appeal made by Saint Paul to the Christians of Corinth: ‘We beseech you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God’” (2 Cor 5:20) – Pope John Paul II.

Via Satellite Russian Catholics pray with the Pope
Hundreds of Catholics in Russia joined Pope Benedict XVI in praying the rosary recently when a dozen European and African cities were linked via satellite with the Vatican. This marked the second time that Russia took part in an event of this type. The church of St Ekaterina in St Petersburg was the venue where the connection took place. Some 600 people gathered for the event. After the celebration of Mass, at 7.00pm local time, the five screens installed in the upper church began to transmit live, from Paul VI Hall at the Vatican, the procession of the cross. Young people were the focus of the rosary but older people and a number of children also attended, some standing for more than four hours. St Petersburg was chosen to lead the fifth mystery of the rosary. Unlike groups in other participating cities, which prayed the first part in their native language and the second in Latin, in the Russian city each of the 10 Hail Marys was prayed entirely in Latin. A university student from St Petersburg said “the union of Catholics from different countries helps us very much. In this way, we know we are not alone, that there are many people who feel like we do, and that is brilliant!”

School Transport
From September 2007, the County Council is considering the following possible changes to existing policy, ceasing to assist with transport for new entrants to denominational schools, introducing a charge of around £1.00 per day or limiting assistance to pupils in receipt of free school meals. Any of these changes could have a differential impact on recruitment to individual schools. Obviously, this will have a disastrous affect on our Catholic Schools in that it will mean that many parents will not be able to afford to send their children to them. You are asked to write to the following address, objecting to the proposals, by 31st March 2006: Mr Terry Rath, Education Officer, Hampshire County Council, County Office, Children’s Services Department, The Castle, Winchester, Hants. SO23 8UG.
