THE UNION
Thought
for the Week
The tomb is empty. Jesus is risen. This is the message we long to hear. Yet a more careful and complete reading of the Gospel brings us back to paschal mystery reality. Even Easter Sunday is not only about rising, but includes dying. Even on Easter morning when we are exuberant with the joy of resurrection celebration, the Gospel reminds us that the paschal mystery embraces dying as well as rising. “On the first day of the week”, is in contrast to the Sabbath day that the disciples would have kept as devout Jews. Now, the first day of the week, they are about their everyday chores. The first thing on Mary Magdalene’s mind is to do what she could not do on Friday or Saturday after Jesus’ death: properly prepare his body for burial. Then the Gospel gives us more contradictions. It was early morning, but still dark; light and darkness still contend; good and evil are still very much part of our everyday lives. Mary no doubt worried about how to remove the stone blocking access to Jesus’ lifeless body and the Gospel says she found it removed; stumbling blocks give way to grace-filled possibilities in God’s time of new life. Mary finds the body gone and doesn’t know where to find it; Jesus’ risen presence can be found where we least expect it. Disciples run to the tomb in hope after experiencing the absence of their Lord. When they arrive they see and believe that Jesus has risen yet they still do not understand.
Like the early disciples we do not understand yet we sing our continuous Alleluias. What Easter reminds us about resurrection is that it dispels darkness, sin and death but not the Christian requirement to embrace dying to self. Easter teaches us that the new life of resurrection is identical to dying to self. Here is the paschal mystery: we sing alleluia even when dying to self for the dead one rises.

Happiness linked to an Encounter
with Christ
Pope Benedict XVI told some 6,500 university students that happiness depends on an encounter with Christ…“For each one of you, as for the apostles,” the Holy Father said, “the encounter with the divine Teacher who calls you friends may be the beginning of an extraordinary venture: that of becoming apostles among your contemporaries to lead them to live their own experience of friendship with God, made Man, with God who has made himself my friend.” He invited the youths to consider Jesus “as one of your best friends, more than that, as the first.” “Then you will see how friendship with him will lead you to open to others, considering them as brothers, keeping with each one a relationship of sincere friendship,” he said. The Pope emphasized that Jesus Christ “is precisely, the incarnate love of God, and only in him is it possible to find the strength to offer human affection and supernatural charity to brothers in a spirit of service that is manifested above all in understanding.” “He who has discovered Christ cannot but lead others to him, as it is not possible to keep a great joy to oneself; it must be communicated,” he added.
