THE UNION
Thought
for the Week
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus assures the disciples that he is not a ghost: “Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” The Gospel time is Easter Sunday evening. Jesus is showing the disciples that he is real and alive and so he asks for a piece of fish and eats it in front of them. For sure, ghosts don’t eat! This risen Jesus is not a ghost! He is alive! It’s not eating and drinking that is amazing, however, but the bringing to fulfilment of God’s saving plan through both Christ and us.
The risen Jesus can be more clearly seen after the resurrection as the one who fulfils the Jewish expectations about the Messiah. According to Jesus, all that happened to him (his suffering, death and resurrection) is explained this way: “it is written….in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms.” The long-prepared saving plan of God reaches its culmination in the mystery of Jesus. The resurrection is truly incredible and amazing: it is the culmination of God’s saving plan, namely, that in the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus sin has been forgiven. This saving plan continues to unfold as Jesus sends us out to be “witnesses of these things.”
But this is not all we are shown about the risen Jesus and the meaning of the resurrection. Ultimately, the risen Jesus is known in those who are called to be his witnesses. These witnesses preach repentance and forgiveness “in this name” to “all the nations.” The reality of the resurrection is known in the new order this event brings forth: repentance and forgiveness. This resurrection is real. This Jesus is alive. This is no ghost!
