A Message from Hazel Larkin
“Greetings to friends in Fareham and Portchester. Thank you for your kind inquiries about my health. I seem to be going on forever! You perhaps wish to know that I am happy and in good spirits with excellent support and care from my wonderful daughter and three carers. Physically, the effect of collapse of muscles because of the polio I contracted in mid teens and gradual deterioration once I reached 70 years, means that I am weak and bedridden. Tumours are growing slowly with pain controlled by drugs. I hope this answers your kind questions. My memories are so happy and I feel gratitude for the friends I made in dear Fareham and Portchester. A big thank you to Father Joe for allowing me this space. Please pray for me as I do for you. Hazel Larkin”

THE UNION
Thought
for the Week
Jesus is risen! But where does that leave us? Last Sunday the gospel challenged us to preach and witness. But where does that leave us? Abandoned? Sheep without a shepherd? This Sunday’s gospel tells us otherwise. We have a shepherd and he is good. The Greek word for “good” in this gospel means having merit in accordance with a purpose. Jesus is the good Shepherd because he accomplished what he came to do: bring us salvation. Jesus accomplishes his purpose both in laying down his life for us and in loving us.
The command Jesus “received from [the] Father” – to lay down his life – is also our command. When we, like Jesus, lay down our life, then we, like Jesus, come to new life. The way of the shepherd is the way of the sheep. The gospel spells out for us how, as disciples of the risen Christ, we are to lay down our life: by leading, protecting, guiding, knowing, loving. Our Christian living, then, is about relating to others as the Father and Good Shepherd have related to us……If our relationship with Jesus is so intimate that we are known as “children of God” (second reading), then we share that same knowledge and intimacy with each other. This is how we are all “one flock”. This is how we share in bringing salvation to others: by knowing others with the same intimacy and self-giving as the Father and Jesus know us.

World Day of Prayer for Vocations
Throughout the Easter Season we should reflect on what it means to be baptised and to live as a member of Christ’s Body, the Church. One consequence of our Baptism is that we are all called to live the Christian vocation, and each of us has a particular vocation in life. Today, we should pray for those who serve us in the ordained Ministry and also ask that we all might recognise the call of God in our own lives. If the whole Church community listens and responds to God, some will discern that their vocation is to serve as a priest or in consecrated life. As well as praying for more priests and religious, we need to ensure that our local communities are places where our young people are helped to grow in faith and love of God, so that they too may, in turn, respond to His call…..The local parish is a community of individuals and a community of families – we need to be open to the possibility that God’s call will come to one of our own, even to me. There will be a retiring collection today for the Clergy Training Fund.
