Call to Prayer for the community of the Solent Pastoral Area
Do you feel the need for quiet and time for reflection? Do you wish
to time away from the business of life? Do you wish for spiritual
formation? Do you wish to answer the call of the Holy Spirit?

If
the answer to any of the above questions is yes, come and join us
for the first Friday of every month at the Church of St Margaret
Mary in Park Gate. Come for a day of prayer, reflection and spiritual
formation. On Friday 3rd February, there will be a Reflection
on the Vision of Margaret Mary revealing the Sacred Heart of
Jesus. We will start at 10.00am with Mass. This will be followed
by adoration. Time will be given to intercession. Father James will
be available for Confession and spiritual direction. We will end
with devotions to the Sacred Heart and Benediction of the Blessed
Sacrament.
After a time
of sharing over lunch, we will have Bible Study, reflection and
sharing on the Scriptures. We will end with prayer and a time for
tea.

Place Pastoral Centre
“Looking at our Shadow” led by Jackie Brookfield. This experiential
workshop takes place on Saturday 4th February from 10.00am to 4.00pm.
It requires no previous knowledge of the work of Carl Jung and is based
on a Fairy Tale. Using painting and drama, we shall be introduced to the
Jungian concept of the shadow and may begin to know the shadow side of
ourselves in relation to the Christian journey. Jackie Brookfield describes
herself as a Psychodynamic Counsellor, working with a Jungian orientation!
She is a Director of a Counselling Service at All Saints Church, Portsmouth
and is an Anglican lay Reader and Spiritual Director in the Diocese of
Portsmouth. The cost of the day is £15.00 (tea/coffee provided but
please bring a packed lunch.) B&B is available: £26.00. Please
contact Park Place on 01329 833043 to book a place.

THE UNION
Thought
for the Week
Formerly when a young girl or boy entered religious life and became a
novice, he or she received a new name. Some of those religious names sound
pretty outlandish to us, for example, Marcianilla, Honorata or Cleomatus.
Strange names indeed to our ears! But there was a purpose to it; this
change of name accomplished two things. First, it gave the novice someone
or something to emulate…Second, the change of name indicated a new
identity; the novice left everything behind and became someone else –
someone seeking to dedicate herself or himself solely to God. The gospel
this Sunday reports how Jesus met “Simon the son of John”
and changed his name to Peter – the rock (Cephas is Greek for rock)
upon which he would build his Church. This name change was a kind of “baptism”
for Peter when he received a new identity – from this time forward
Peter grew in his relationship with Jesus and his ability to follow him
faithfully.

at this time.
Octave
of Prayer for Christian Unity
This begins on Wednesday 18th January. There will be a united Service
on Sunday 22nd January at Holy Trinity Church, West Street, Fareham at
6.30pm and at St Mary’s Church, Portchester Castle, also on Sunday
22nd January at 6.30pm. Weekday prayer will take place at Holy Trinity
Church at 9.00am. All are welcome. Please come and join in with other
Christians from Fareham and Portchester. See the notice board for details.
The Vatican
states that this year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity emphasises
that the promotion of such unity is a means to foster peace in the world.
Hence, the phrase of Matthew’s Gospel “Where two or three
are gathered in My Name, I am there among them” has been chosen
as the theme of the event, to be observed in most of the world from 18th
to 25th January. The new Pope has made the promotion of Christian unity
a priority of his ministry as Bishop of Rome.

Hospital
Stay
Should you or a member of your family be taken into hospital for a routine
operation or rest care, please let us know at the Parish Office. Although
you may register your details at the hospital and include your religion
as Catholic, this information is not automatically relayed to the Parish.
The same applies if you are taken into hospital as an emergency. A relative
or friend needs to let us know. If you are moved to another ward, this
is not automatically conveyed to us, and even upon inquiry at your original
ward, they will not necessarily tell us to where you have been moved.
If the hospital authorities fail to offer you the opportunity of spiritual
support, they are contravening the NHS guidelines for the spiritual needs
of patients and staff. Please also let us know when you have returned
home. Visits can be arranged and Holy Communion brought to you at home,
but only if we know you have been released from hospital.
