Sister

Recently a few parishioners called on Sister Julia at her convent in Kent.
They brought her your best wishes and prayers. She is as cheerful and
good-humoured as her condition allows: still supports Liverpool and looks
forward to a trip to Ireland in summer. Unable to write because of her
shaky fingers, she wishes you all a very good New Year and sends her thanks
and prayers.

“Looking at our Shadow” led by Jackie Brookfield. This experiential
workshop takes place on Saturday 4th February from 10.00am to 4.00pm.
It requires no previous knowledge of the work of Carl Jung and is based
on a Fairy Tale. Using painting and drama, we shall be introduced to the
Jungian concept of the shadow and may begin to know the shadow side of
ourselves in relation to the Christian journey. Jackie Brookfield describes
herself as a Psychodynamic Counsellor, working with a Jungian orientation!
She is a Director of a Counselling Service at All Saints Church, Portsmouth
and is an Anglican lay Reader and Spiritual Director in the Diocese of
Portsmouth. The cost of the day is £15.00 (tea/coffee provided but
please bring a packed lunch.) B&B is available: £26.00. Please

THE UNION
Thought
for the Week
Cardinal is moved by ‘tsunami of love’
Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor visited Sri Lanka this Christmas
to mark the tsunami anniversary and to view CAFOD’s reconstruction
projects. He reflected,
“What will stay with me is the great ‘tide’ of human
love
that has followed the ‘waves’, dissolving barriers and bringing
new opportunities for the future.”
Cardinal
Cormac has a great ability to unite and inspire, for as he visited Muslim
villages, Hindu settlements and Buddhist communities he was greeted with
warmth, respect and affection. He felt that one of the most positive things
about the tsunami has been the co-operation between the different religious
communities, which assisted each other in practical, human ways.
So it was
that Cardinal Cormac showed through example how unity can bring together
divided communities which will lead us to a brighter and more harmonious
future.
Jean
Carter RIP
Please
pray for the repose of the soul of Mrs Jean Carter who died at Q.A. Hospital
on 18th January. Please also remember her family and friends in your prayers.
Howard
Brebner
Howard Brebner had a successful operation on his bowel cancer at the
beginning of January and is now back at home, recuperating. He has now
to have twelve weeks intensive chemo-therapy, to which he is not looking
forward with much enthusiasm, as many of us will understand. He is extremely
grateful for and appreciative of, the many prayers which we have been
offering for him, and asks that we will continue to pray for the successful
outcome of his treatment.
Octave
of Prayer for Christian Unity
There will be a united Service this Sunday 22nd January at Holy Trinity
Church, West Street, Fareham at 6.30pm and at St Mary’s Church,
Portchester Castle, also on Sunday 22nd January at 6.30pm. Please
come and join in with other Christians from Fareham and Portchester. See
the notice board for details.
The Vatican
states that this year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity emphasises
that the promotion of such unity is a means to foster peace in the world.
Hence, the phrase of Matthew’s Gospel “Where two or three
are gathered in My Name, I am there among them” has been chosen
as the theme of the event, to be observed in most of the world from 18th
to 25th January. The new Pope has made the promotion of Christian unity
a priority of his ministry as Bishop of Rome.
Animated
film on Pope John Paul II
A 30 minute animated film on Pope John Paul II is due out in April. “John
Paul II: The Friend of All Humanity” is the first international
film of its type on the Polish Pontiff. The film will be released worldwide
on 2nd April, the first anniversary of John Paul II’s death. It
touches on the human side of Karol Wojtyla, from his infancy until he
became Pope. The film was made possible thanks to an agreement with the
Vatican Television Centre, which offered its documentary resource for
its production. The producer said that the film “represents the
human charism of John Paul II’s personality,” which attracts
the interest “of people of very different creeds.” “It
is not we who speak about John Paul II, he said, “We let his deeds,
words and thoughts speak about him.”
House
Group
Due to sickness the House Group was cancelled on 18th January and will
now take place on 25th January at 101 The Avenue, Fareham.
