THE UNION

Thought for the Week
This gospel explicitly teaches us that discipleship plunges us into the dying and rising mystery of Christ. The disciples kept misunderstanding this. We must recall that our own baptism, as our entrance into discipleship, is an ongoing yes to the daily dying and rising in Christ. This seems like a daunting task – serving others, dying to self. We know, however, that it is possible to live this way because Jesus is the model and showed us by his own servant life. Serving means nothing other than giving our lives for others. It means that when our nerves are frazzled and the baby is crying we manage to find the energy to caress and comfort. When the boss is demanding, rather than grumbling to co-workers, we put out the effort to mediate a better relationship. When we hear of a neighbour in need we ring the doorbell, introduce ourselves, ask how we might help. Serving others means that we look for ways to make the lives of others better. In turn, God gives us a share in Jesus’ glory.

News from The Vatican
Pope Names Archbishop of Bombay
Pope Benedict XVI has named Archbishop Oswald Gracias as Archbishop of Bombay. He is a native of Mumbai, is aged 61 years and was ordained a priest in 1970.

Pope to visit Turkey
Pope Benedict XVI will visit Turkey from 28th November to 1st December. The trip is taking place in response to an invitation from Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer.

Prayer and Science help in Pain Relief, says Pope
Echoing the intuitions of St Pio of Pietrelcina, Pope Benedict says that prayer and science are two converging forces in relieving human suffering. “Faith in God and scientific research co-operate to the same end, which can best be expressed in the words of Jesus himself: ‘that they may have life and have it abundantly,’” said Pope Benedict. “God is life, and he wills that man be cured of all sickness of body and spirit, that is why Jesus attended tirelessly the sick, pre-proclaiming with his cure the Kingdom of God already at hand.”

Shoeboxes
Now is the time to start putting together your shoeboxes for Romania. The last day for bringing them to church will be Sunday 29th October. We will collect boxes at Sacred Heart porch, St Philip Howard porch and the Richeldis Room at Our Lady of Walsingham.

Because of difficulties with Romanian customs, it is essential that you read and follow the instructions on the leaflet, and especially the Gift Aid section if you pay income tax. Also read the list of forbidden items. Customs open boxes at random, and condemn a whole consignment if they find forbidden items. Thank you in advance for your generosity and kindness to others so much less fortunate than ourselves. God bless. Marian.
