Sacred Heart Catholic ChurchEducation Sunday

THE UNION

Thought for the Week
Even today, when leprosy isn’t a common disease in most parts of the world, it still elicits repulsion in us. In Scripture, leprosy referred to any number of skin diseases, but no matter which, the result was the same: exclusion from the community. In a purely physical sense, this was bad enough for it meant isolation and alienation. Jewish law, however, added a further demoralising expulsion. Because one afflicted with leprosy was ritually unclean or impure, he or she was forbidden participation in community worship.

Imagine the sense of alienation and isolation that drives this leper to kneel before Jesus (a posture of submission) and beg to be made clean. Jesus responds to this outpouring of emotion with deep feelings of his own and then does the unimaginable: he reaches out and touches the leper. This touch must have required great compassion on the part of Jesus, so much that it took precedence over the law and Jesus’ own risk of ritual impurity. The leper is healed and then admonished to show himself to the priest, in fulfilment of the law, in order to regain ritual purity and be restored to the worship of the community.

In this gospel the healing hand of Jesus stretches out to an outcast of society – a leper. The leper, having been healed, is compelled “to publicise the whole matter.” Both the actions of Jesus and the leper inform our discipleship: like Jesus, we reach out even to outcasts; like the leper, we proclaim the good news.

Pope Benedict’s Message

Catholic Church in Fareham and PortchesterBelow is an extract from Pope Benedict XVI’s message for Italy’s Pro-Life Day which was on 5th February.
“Today in Italy Pro-Life Day is being observed, which constitutes a precious occasion of prayer and reflection on the topics of the defence and promotion of human life, especially when it is found in conditions of difficulty. Present in St Peter’s Square are numerous lay faithful who work in this field, some committed in the Pro-Life Movement.

I address my cordial greetings to them………..and I again express my appreciation of the work they do so that life will always be welcomed as gift and supported with love.

In the light of my recent encyclical on Christian love, I would like to emphasise the importance of the “service of charity” in supporting the promotion of human life. In this connection, even before undertaking operative initiatives, it is essential to promote an appropriate “attitude to the other.” The culture of life is based, in fact, on attention to others, without exclusions or discriminations.

“All” human life, as such, is worthy of and calls for always being defended and promoted. We know well that this truth runs the risk of being contradicted…..in the so-called welfare societies: Life is exalted while it is enjoyable, but there is a tendency to stop respecting it when it is sick or experiences some kind of disability.

Beginning, on the contrary, from profound love for every person, it is possible to apply effective forms of service to life: both the nascent as well as that marked by marginalisation or suffering, especially in its terminal phase.

The Virgin Mary received with perfect love the word of life, Jesus Christ, who came into the world so that men “may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). We commend to her women who are expecting a child, families, health agents and volunteers committed in different ways in the service of life.”
