Unfair Trade – Black Gold
This powerful and moving documentary, Black Gold, brings to light the truth behind our coffee cups – that millions of coffee farmers are living on less than 25p a day despite the £40 billion plus profits of the coffee industry. If this film is not showing at a cinema near you, please pledge to see it by leaving your pledge on the Black Gold website or ask your local cinema directly to show the film. Simply say you would like them to show Black Gold – if enough people ask, they will.

THE UNION
Thought
for the Week
For many reasons, the fish became a much-beloved symbol in early Christianity. The gospels make allusions to fish a number of times: some of the disciples were fishermen; Jesus commands them to put out their nets and they catch an abundance of fish; Jesus is cooking fish on the seashore for the disciples’ breakfast; the risen Jesus eats a piece of fish in the upper room. Later, the letters of the Greek word for fish, ichthus, became an acronym for “Jesus, Christ, God, Son, Saviour.”
The gospel for this solemnity mentions two fish but they were seemingly insufficient for the task at hand: feed a large, hungry crowd. At Jesus’ blessing the fish are sufficient and satisfying. Herein is a lesson: the fish is a symbol for self-giving. Jesus is the one who gave himself totally and continues to give himself to us in the Eucharist. Jesus not only fills the hungry with good things, he fills them to overflowing. This solemnity reminds us that Jesus’ generous extravagance is not measured only by the amount of food but by the kind of Food he offers – his very self in his Body and Blood.
We tend to limit our understanding of the Body and Blood of Christ to the Eucharistic elements. This gospel expands our perception to include the whole event of gathering, blessing, breaking, giving, eating, being satisfied.

Can You Help in the Church?
Our three churches are cared for in many ways by different people. Each of our three churches has a small group of people who meet once a week to clean that particular church. Similarly, a small number of people take a turn to help to arrange the flowers. More helpers are needed. If you could spare a little time to help to clean one of our churches or to take a turn in arranging the flower displays, please speak to Father Joe. More details of these activities are available in our Parish Handbook.
