THE UNION
Thought
for the Week
In the “busy-ness” of the average person’s everyday life, we must take time to listen to others so that we truly encounter them. This is primary if we disciples are not to lose sight of the One who teaches us – and often teaches us through those to whom we are truly hospitable. Discipleship relativizes our noble and pious instincts to be busy about others and calls us to listen and take the other into our heart. It necessarily requires our surrender to the One who speaks, and that surrender looks like “welcome, listen, do.” The encounter with Jesus is essential for Christian hospitality. Let us hear that well!
The gospel demonstrates many expressions of hospitality: welcoming, listening and serving. While each expression is valuable, none is complete in itself or an end in itself. Rather, hospitality in its deepest meaning makes possible a personal encounter of the kind that Mary is having with Jesus. This is the “better part.”

Can You Help in the Church?
Our three churches are cared for in many ways by different people. Each of our three churches has a small group of people who meet once a week to clean that particular church. Similarly, a small number of people take a turn to help to arrange the flowers in the Sacred Heart Church, St Philip Howard Church or the Church of Our Lady of Walsingham. More helpers are needed. If you could spare a little time to help to clean one of our churches or to take a turn in arranging the flower displays, please speak to Father Joe. More details of these activities are available in our Parish Handbook.
Farmers’ Markets
There will be two Farmers’ Markets in Fareham’s West Street pedestrianised precinct this August – the first will be from 9.00am to 2.00pm on Saturday 4th August and the second will be from 9.00am to 2.00pm on Thursday 16th August. Up to 40 local producers will be selling the best of their produce directly to customers.
Sponsored Abseil by Fr Andrew
Our own Fr Andrew Chandler will be doing a sponsored abseil to raise money for two keyhole theatres for Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, of which he is Chaplain. This will take place at 11.00am on Saturday 28th July in the area of the Guildhall in Portsmouth. The keyhole theatres will enable patients to have a quicker operation and be in hospital for a shorter time. Sponsor forms are available in the church porch and we pray that he comes down feet first!
