Words of Wisdom
Some people think of religion as a cure-all -follow Jesus and everything will be rosy.
But Jesus himself tells us that if we want to
enjoy the ultimate in glory, we have to pass
through suffering and pain.
We live in the shadow of the cross.

THE UNION
Thought
for the Week
In this gospel, Jesus challenges those following him to calculate the cost of discipleship. This cost is steep: hate family and one’s own life, carry one’s cross and renounce all possessions. These costs are not borne only once, however; rather, they are the daily demands of discipleship.
We take much time and care over major decisions, for example, buying a house, marrying, taking a new job. Nevertheless, each of these brings its own surprises and new challenges, not initially considered. The same is true for committed discipleship – even after we make the decision, there is still much more to be done.

Extraordinary Form of Mass
On 7th July this year Pope Benedict XVI issued a document called a Motu Proprio – (a document issued on his own initiative). This de-restricted the older form of Mass that many in our parish grew up with and which was replaced in 1971 with the form of Mass that we currently use. Up until this point to celebrate this older form of Mass one needed special permission from the local Bishop. Now, however, Pope Benedict is allowing this Mass to be freely celebrated whenever a group requests it. He elaborates that our understanding should be that there are two forms of one and the same Mass, the ordinary form which we are all used to and use every day and the extraordinary form which is the old Latin Mass that many of us remember. His hope is that both the extraordinary and the ordinary form of Mass will influence each other.
Although the document was issued on 7th July it comes into effect on the 14th of September The Feast of the Holy Cross. In light of this, to welcome the Motu Proprio I will be offering the extraordinary form of Mass (i.e. the old Latin Mass) in its sung form, (Missa Cantata) on that day at 9.30am at Sacred Heart Church. As with every Mass, all are welcome and a leaflet is being drawn up which will allow everyone to be able to understand and participate. Before the start of the Mass I will be explaining how the Faithful take part. I hope this will give us the opportunity to explore and experience the richness of our Catholic tradition.
Mass at Our Lady of Walsingham this week will take place on Thursday 13th September at 9.30am. |
