THE UNION

Thought for the Week
Both the magi and Herod express a desire to do homage to the newborn King. Herod’s ‘homage’ is a ruse to hoard his wealth and keep his power for himself. The magi’s homage is a genuine opening up and giving of their treasures.

Let us pray that all who come to our home this year rejoice to find Christ living among us; and may we seek and serve, in everyone we meet, Jesus who is Lord for ever and ever.
From Living Liturgy

Father Joe, Canon Richard, Father Tony, Father David and Deacon Langford send their warm thanks for the many cards, gifts and good wishes given to them over the Christmas Season.

Father Joe writes: “thank you to all those who contributed to our celebration of Christmas and a special ‘thank you’ for your generous Christmas Offering.”

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill
This Bill is going through Parliament at the moment. It is a proposed new law about infertility treatment and about experimentation on human embryos and raises four key concerns:

Hybrids: the Bill will allow scientists to create embryos that are half human, half animal e.g. from the egg of a woman and sperm from an animal.

Welfare of the Child: at present, infertility clinics have to consider the need of a child for a father. The Bill will remove the reference to a father and will make it easier to use women as ‘surrogate mothers.’

How future decisions will be made: the authority appears to exclude people who cherish human life from conception.

Abortion: the Bill does not mention abortion but some MP’s have already said that they want to amend the law to make abortion more easily available.

Please write to your MP at the House of Commons, London. SW1A 0AA and make your views known.

Ann Widdecombe and guests will be at the Turner Sims Concert Hall, University of Southampton on Wednesday 30th January from 7.30pm to educate and inform on today’s life issues and the new Bill going through Parliament.
