Palms
You are invited to bring any palms that you have from last year to each of our churches so that they may be used to make ashes for Ash Wednesday this year, which takes place on 6th February. A box is available at the back of the churches for your use.

Chinese Lunar New Year of the Rat
Chinese New Year is on 7th February 2008 and is the Year of the Rat. You are invited to the 12.00 noon children’s Mass at St John’s Cathedral, Edinburgh Road, Portsmouth on Sunday 3rd February to celebrate. As red is the Chinese auspicious colour, you are encouraged to wear something red.

Thought
for the Week
Every encounter with Jesus provokes a response; the gospel for this Sunday shows a response of discipleship that is quick and decisive. Our own call to discipleship comes at our baptism, but unlike the disciples in the gospel our response isn’t usually so quick. We spend our whole life trying to see the great Light that is the Saviour of the World. We spend our whole life passing from death (darkness and gloom) to living in the light. We practise following Jesus in the simple, everyday things that come our way: the friend who needs a listening ear, the elderly parent who needs a comforting phone call, the sick child who interrupts our sleep. In all of these instances do we hear Jesus’ refrain: repent? Turn from ourselves toward those in need. Turn from darkness to light.

Celebrating Marriage Week: 7th – 14th February

Lent Lunches Lenten Discussion Groups The Portchester Churches will also be holding Lenten Discussion Groups. The topic is “A Life Calling” and is based on the film “Billy Elliot”. The film and discussions take place on 14th February at St Mary’s Church, Portchester Castle; 21st February at Our Lady of Walsingham Church, 28th February at Portchester Methodist Church, 6th March at St Mary’s and 13th March at Portchester Methodist Church. All begin at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome. If you plan to attend, please notify Joan at the Parish Office. |
Lent Breakfasts World Day of the Sick
In his message for World Day of the Sick, Pope Benedict said “Pain is the door by which the Faithful can enter into the mystery of redemption and reach with Christ peace and happiness.”
Table Top Sale
There will be a “nearly new “ table top sale in the Sacred Heart Hall, Saturday 16th February 2008 11.00am to 1.00pm. The sale will continue in the hall following the 9.00am Sunday Mass on 17th February. All proceeds to the Parish Lenten Appeal supporting Adopt Sri Lanka. Refreshments provided with a warm welcome to all.

Non-residential Retreat with Fr John Edwards SJ
Re-charge your spiritual batteries by taking part in a non-residential retreat led by Fr John Edwards SJ, 22nd to 24th February (8.00pm Friday to 3.00pm Sunday). Programme includes inspiring talks, daily Mass, Morning and Evening Prayer of the Church, a reconciliation service and plenty of time for personal reflection. Cost, including all meals, is £53.00. Poverty and Homelessness Action Week
Join Havant MP David Willetts and Portsmouth South MP Mike Hancock at the ‘Opening Doors, Opening Hearts’ event, 3.30pm to 5.30pm on 1st February at the Discovery Centre in St John’s Cathedral, Edinburgh Road, Portsmouth. This has been organized by Portsmouth city Churches of all denominations and will include discussions on poverty and homelessness in the Portsmouth area. Local agencies will share the experiences of asylum seekers and homeless individuals and there will be Question Time to both MPs and key Portsmouth decision-makers. All welcome – Free – No need to book in advance. Refreshments from 3.15pm.
