Catholic Church in Fareham and Portchester

Sacred Heart Catholic Church Easter Vigil
The Easter Vigil takes place at Sacred Heart Church on Saturday 22nd March at 7.00pm. It is the high point of the Church’s year because it is the central proclamation and celebration of Jesus’ resurrection, with baptism at its heart. Please come and support Barbara and Paul who are to be received into the full communion of the Catholic Church.

Party after the Easter Vigil
Following the Easter Vigil Mass on Saturday 22nd March there will be a party to welcome Barbara and Paul into the Church.

41 Portland Street, Fareham
The Parish has commenced refurbishment works at 41 Portland Street which are expected to last twelve weeks. No-one is allowed on the site at No. 41 without the permission of the contractor (this is a Health and Safety requirement.) The contractors will need places for their vehicles and equipment, therefore, the church car park in Hartlands Road is not to be used by parishioners for the duration of the contract. No unauthorised person is to park either in the Presbytery driveway or the drive of No. 41 in any circumstances. I know this is a real inconvenience, especially at Mass times, but we have no other option if we wish this work to continue.

Archbishop Kevin McDonald
We have heard that Archbishop Kevin is to have a heart bypass operation in the next few days. Please remember him in your prayers.

THE UNION

Thought for the Week
At Jesus’ crucifixion, bystanders taunted him, “save yourself, if you are the Son of God.” Jesus reveals on the cross that as the Son of God he would not save himself, for he had already “emptied himself” by becoming human and would remain human, even unto death. Indeed, Jesus embraced death and, in that embrace, over came death. Jesus, fully human and fully divine, laid aside his divine glory and his human life so that we might be saved. We, too, must lay aside our self-seeking if we are to receive his self-giving.

From Living Liturgy

Lenten Appeal Ladder
Sincere thanks and gratitude to the children of St Jude’s School and to Sharon Roberts, Sheelagh Pickard, Emma Connolly and Agnes Slattery for designing and creating four splendid Lenten Appeal Ladders. The ladders are on display in our three churches and school, each indicating week by week the amount of money being raised for the ‘Build a Classroom’ in Sri Lanka project.

To date, £3,347.65 has been raised. The pupils of St Jude’s School are participating with enthusiasm to help raise funds for the children of Nidangala School, Sri Lanka. Each class has decided to raise money in their own way, but whatever they achieve I am so grateful, as these young people are fine examples of good stewards, using their gifts and talents to help those in need. Thank you.

Fund Raising Events for the Lent Appeal
There will be a chocolate tombola stall and a cake stall following all Sunday Masses this weekend.

Calling the Youth of the Parish
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady to Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes. If you are aged 17 years plus and would like to volunteer as a helper during the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes from 22nd to 29th August 2008 please speak to Fr Joe for further information. Helpers are required for duties ranging from pushing wheelchairs, assisting in the Accueil, to serving meals. It is a marvellous experience and opportunity for young people to be in such an uplifting place and a privilege to care for the sick pilgrims. This special pilgrimage is under the leadership of Bishop Declan Lang, Bishop of Clifton.

We truly appreciate them. Each of you will be remembered in our prayers, as we thank God for such a supportive Parish community.
