41 Portland Street, Fareham
The Parish has commenced refurbishment works at 41 Portland Street which are expected to last twelve weeks. No-one is allowed on the site at No. 41 without the permission of the contractor (this is a Health and Safety requirement.) The contractors will need places for their vehicles and equipment, therefore, the church car park in Hartlands Road is not to be used by parishioners for the duration of the contract. No unauthorised person is to park either in the Presbytery driveway or the drive of No. 41 in any circumstances. I know this is a real inconvenience, especially at Mass times, but we have no other option if we wish this work to continue.

THE UNION
Thought
for the Week
This gospel assures us that the risen One, the Good Shepherd, is truly there for us, calls us by name, and leads us to abundant life. Thus does Jesus model for us how we, too, are to be both gate and shepherd. The second reading gives us a practical blueprint for our shepherding: patience in suffering, doing good, return no insult or threat, hand ourselves over for the good of others. This may seem like a tall order, and it is. Jesus is always there, walking “ahead of” us, guiding us toward being good shepherds ourselves.
From Living Liturgy
Irene Mayhew RIP
Please pray for the repose of the soul of Irene Mayhew, who died recently. May she rest in peace.
Fidei Donum Mass
This Mass is being celebrated at St John’s Cathedral, Portsmouth at 12.00 noon on Saturday 19th April. It is an inter-cultural celebration of ourselves as a diocese of Mission. Fr Tony Chantry, Superior General of the Mill Hill Fathers, is the preacher and there will be a lot of African music etc. during the Mass. All are welcome.
Enrich your Marriage
When someone buys a new car they usually want to look after it. The manufacturer recommends that they check the battery, tyres and oil and get it serviced on a regular basis. Relationships also need to have a check-up from time to time. A Marriage Encounter Weekend gives married couples time to look at their relationship. It is not for couples with serious problems. It is an enrichment experience. The weekend is spent listening to a series of presentations on various aspects of relationship, including the Catholic Church’s vision for Marriage. After each presentation some time is spent as a couple, reflecting on what has been heard. Apart from mealtimes and the concluding Mass, the weekend is spent together as a couple. It is a private weekend with no group discussions. The next weekend which is convenient for travel is at West Wickham, Kent on 20th to 22nd June.
Engaged Couples
An Engaged Encounter Weekend is similar to a Marriage Encounter Weekend, with the emphasis on communication and relationship building. It is recommended that couples attend a weekend well in advance, ideally at least six months before their wedding day, to allow any uncertainties to be explored properly. A non-residential weekend is to be held near Chichester from 31st May to 1st June. Accommodation can be arranged if required. For further details please contact Chris and Mary Farrall on 01962 620289 or visit the website www.wwme.org.uk through which you can also arrange a booking.
No charge is made for the Weekends, but married couples are asked to make a donation of £10.00 for a Marriage Encounter Weekend and engaged couples pay a booking deposit of £25.00. Later, on both weekends, couples are asked to make a donation towards the Movement’s costs. |

Vocations
We each have a vocation in life and today is a day of prayer for vocations to the Priesthood and consecrated life. We pray not only for those who are already in these life-states, but also that others will be called by God to these vocations. There will be a retiring collection for the Clergy Training Fund.
Fire in the Darkness – Chartres Pilgrimage
The Chartres Pilgrimage is an ancient tradition in France which has been given new vigour by the association Notre-Dame de Chrétienté which has organised it for the last 25 years. It is a walk of prayer and penance to the glory of God and Our Blessed Lady. Encouraged by the Pope and numerous bishops, 15,000 pilgrims (including 850 from outside France) take part in a three-day walk of 70 miles, making this the largest pilgrimage of its kind in Western Europe, both in the distance covered and in the number of pilgrims. The pilgrimage takes place from 9th to 13th May 2008. The total cost for adults is £230.00 which includes coach travel to France, two night’s hotel (B&B) accommodation (one in Paris and one in Chartres), 2 nights tented accommodation, pilgrimage registration, pilgrimage booklet, 3 course meal with a quarter bottle of wine on Monday evening, guides and return by coach on Tuesday. Please see the leaflets in the church porch for contact details.
Major Festivals
This year, for the major festivals of Christmas and Easter when the whole parish came together to celebrate, we used the Sacred Heart Church as our venue. The main reason for this was that Our Lady of Walsingham was too small and St Philip Howard, although a good size, does not have an organ. This left the Sacred Heart Church but because it does not have the capacity, it necessitated putting the choir behind the sanctuary to allow as many people to attend as possible. Some people expressed concerns that this might be inappropriate but our Diocesan Director of Liturgy, Paul Inwood, who was the one who actually recommended it to provide the extra room in the church assured us that this arrangement is liturgically correct. Having three churches always produces challenges and no solution is ever perfect. We will continue to explore various options.

Ravenswood Shop at Knowle
We urgently need more people to assist us so that we can continue providing this service to patients and staff. The shop is only open between 10am and 12 mid-day, Monday to Friday. Even if you can only give a few hours now and then, it would be a great help. Contact Pat Chrystal on 01329 282126.
A Message from the Mayor of Fareham
“Dear Father Joe, what a pleasure it was to be able to join in the Parish Celebration of Mass yesterday. Thank you for inviting me. I know the unseasonal heavy snowfall meant that the congregation was smaller than usual, but I was impressed by the number who were there. Despite the snow outside there was a very warm welcome from everyone present and I appreciated the tea and chat afterwards. Your choir sang beautifully and I was most impressed by the ‘stand in’ organist and would never have guessed that he was sight reading. Please pass on my thanks to Reverend Langford, Theresa and Terry Phillips and everyone involved. Kind regards,
Yours sincerely, Katrina Trott, Mayor”
