THE UNION

Thought for the Week
On any sunny summer day on a beach, one can usually find small children with buckets and spades building sand castles. The children tend to build too close to the water, probably because the sand is wet there and easier to pack down and form. Invariably, a large wave will come along and wash the castle away. Undaunted, the little ones just begin again, still too close, and the efforts wash away once more. In the gospel this Sunday, Jesus admonishes us to build on rock, not sand. Rain, floods, wind might buffet a house built on rock but it will stand. If rain or waves buffet a house built on sand, away it goes. Jesus’ words are too important to risk being washed away; what is at stake is entering ‘the kingdom of heaven.’ What is the rock upon which we must build? The gospel answers twofold: listening to the words of Jesus and doing the will of God. Discipleship comes down to this: to live by Jesus’ words or not. There is no other choice. The consequences of this fundamental choice are clear: safety from the storm or ruin. We are to build our lives on the solid foundation (rock) of an obedient relationship to God and to Christ.
